Abstract

Purpose

Interprofessional collaboration and coordination are critical to developing solutions to complex problems, and many workplaces engage in coordination and collaboration across organizational boundaries. This development changes work conditions and workplaces for many people. The ethnographic study of workplaces needs to re-configure the toolbox to adjust to such changes. The purpose of this study was to explore how the ethnographic study of dispersed workplaces can benefit from the analytical concept of boundary work.

Design/methodology/approach

A multi-sited ethnographic study was conducted in two health promotion programs, introducing new collaborative relations across sectors and professions. The concept of boundary work was applied as the conceptual frame and introduced the diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) as a boundary object.

Findings

Professional boundaries are key to understanding interorganizational and interprofessional collaborations. The ethnographic study of complex, multi-sited settings using boundary work as a conceptual framework can enrich workplace ethnographies by demonstrating how professions position themselves through framing. Such framing strategies are used to construct, defend or contest boundaries. Boundary objects may potentially bridge devices connecting people across boundaries.

Originality/value

The traditional ethnographic notion of “following” an object or a subject is difficult in a workplace environment dispersed across multiple sites and involving many different actors. This suggests that workplace ethnographies studying interorganizational workplaces would benefit from a shift in focus from place-based or group-based ethnography to a field-level ethnography of relations using boundary work as an analytical frame.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to use the concept of boundary turbulence from Communication Privacy Management (CPM) theory to better understand how employee monitoring impacts employee engagement. This study is one of the first in corporate communication to combine the frameworks of CPM and employee engagement to better understand employee experiences.

Design/methodology/approach

To answer the research question, we conducted an online, open-ended survey that asked 633 participants to provide feedback regarding being monitored at work and how these experiences impacted their engagement with their employer.

Findings

This study sought to understand how boundary turbulence occurs in relation to employee engagement when employees are monitored at work. In total, four examples of boundary turbulence were illustrated in the data: employer monitoring creates distrust; employees find ways to resist being monitored; monitoring doesn’t accurately capture employee engagement; and monitoring leads to disengagement.

Originality/value

The findings from this study lead to important conclusions regarding what happens when employees experience boundary turbulence, and how it relates to employee engagement. This study illustrates how employee monitoring is interpreted as an attempt to control employees, which can lead to distrust and negatively impact employee engagement. Furthermore, boundary turbulence can threaten psychological safety and presence, which can cultivate employee disengagement. Therefore, employees may seek out ways to actively resist, which reiterates that internal publics are distinctive, active, and agentic audiences that cannot be forgotten or assumed.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to analyse the construct of business model innovation (BMI) in the digital and sustainable landscape, investigating the key role of boundary strategies. The paper advances a comprehensive framework aimed at further understanding the overlap among digitalization, sustainability and BMI development, by a “boundary approach”.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper follows a theoretical approach based on an in-depth review of relevant literature on BMI, digitalization and sustainability as relevant megatrends and, boundary management. By critically integrating the literature, a framework is developed with the objective of supporting firms in the current transformation challenges.

Findings

The paper highlights the interplay among BMIs, megatrends and boundary management. The pressures and opportunities driven by the technological changes have made even more relevant the management of resources placed in the boundary area. Our study shows how firms can rethink their BMs in the digital and sustainable landscape by providing a boundary-based framework.

Practical implications

The framework offers insights and guidelines to help practitioners manage the change processes dictated by digitalization and sustainability. The authors encourage a focus on boundary resources/capabilities to increase the effective management of the digitalization and sustainability processes, to grasp the external stimuli driven by these two megatrends and to develop new/renewed BMIs.

Originality/value

This study emphasizes the importance of developing new BMIs in the current digital and sustainable landscape starting from the analysis of firm’s boundaries. The paper enriches the BMI literature supporting the enhancement of boundary management, leading firms to overcome challenges in the digital and sustainable landscape.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to rethink the concept of organizational culture as something that emerges bottom-up by using the sociological concepts of boundary object and boundary work as an analytical lens and to show how this approach can help understand and facilitate intersectoral coordination.

Design/methodology/approach

We used observations and qualitative interviews to develop “deep” knowledge about processes of intersectoral coordination. The study draws on a conceptual framework of “boundary work” and “boundary objects” to show how a bottom-up perspective on organizational culture can produce better understanding of and pave the way for intersectoral coordination. We use a case of health professionals engaged in two Danish intersectoral programs developing and providing health promotion services for women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).

Findings

The study showed how boundary work revolves around negotiations on how to define, understand and act on the diagnosis of GDM. This diagnosis has the characteristics of a “boundary object”, being more loosely structured in general terms, but strongly structured in local settings. Boundary objects help connect different professionals and facilitate coordination. The analysis showed how the introduction of time and the concept of “lifelong health promotion” helped to transgress existing organizational and professional boundaries.

Research limitations/implications

The findings contribute to the literature on organizational culture and intersectoral coordination. We highlight the benefits of a practice-oriented, bottom-up perspective for a better understanding of how shared meaning is produced in cross professional coordination and collaboration. While the theoretical implications will be general applicable when studying organizational culture, the implications for practice are sensitive to context and the processes we have described as the outcomes of boundary work are generated from cases that were most likely to provide deep insight into our research topic.

Practical implications

For practice this can build bridges between organizational and professional boundaries.

Originality/value

The findings contribute to the literature on organizational culture and intersectoral coordination. We highlight the benefits of a practice-oriented, bottom-up perspective for a better understanding of how shared meaning is produced in cross professional coordination. This may build bridges between organizational and professional boundaries in practice settings.

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to identify potential differences in experiences and their causes from a gender-based perspective.

Design/methodology/approach

We use secondary data, and we conduct a thematic analysis, to identify whether and how women and men negotiate differently.

Findings

Despite remote work being considered as creating a level-playing field for both genders, women are still vulnerable to work and life demands, and pre-existing stereotypes become exacerbated. In addition, we show how technology might be used to manage physical and temporal boundaries, through integration or segmentation tactics.

Originality/value

There is a growing body of literature that focuses on work-life conflict among teleworkers. Yet, there is limited research that explores such conflicts from a gender perspective, specifically whether and how different genders manage boundaries between work and life differently.

Abstract

Purpose

Infrastructure forms a basis for the operations and sustainability of the modern society. This paper aims to recognize value creation from the infrastructure procurement ecosystem perspective to achieve those goals. The pursuit of enhancing value creation involves an examination of infrastructure procurement challenges, boundaries as well as boundary spanners that facilitate effective knowledge transfer and interaction.

Design/methodology/approach

The qualitative study is based on content analysis of 25 thematic interviews. Data was transcribed and coded via Atlas.ti software.

Findings

Infrastructure procurement value creation challenges appear complex and related to boundaries that hamper collaboration, coordination and knowledge sharing. Our results show that these boundaries locate within and between different levels of procurement ecosystem. Therefore, value creation in infrastructure procurement requires boundary spanners for leveraging knowledge sharing and interaction. Artifacts, discussion, processes and brokers as identified boundary spanners are strongly nested and interrelated in the industry. Special attention should be given to supporting individuals to act as brokers, since they play the key roles in trust building, culture steering and usage of other boundary spanners.

Social implications

Promoting value creation in infrastructure procurement helps to achieve socio-economic development goals.

Originality/value

This study offers a unique perspective on value creation in the context of infrastructure by adopting an ecosystem lens and examining boundary crossing mechanisms. The results support future development of collaboration and knowledge sharing practices fostering procurement productivity.

Abstract

Purpose

The paper aims to introduce a new algorithm based on the boundary integral method developed to solve moving boundary phase change problem subject to all possible cases of cyclic boundary temperature.

Design/methodology/approach

In the present paper, the phase change problem with periodic boundary temperature, which may be above or below the phase change temperature, is analyzed. The analysis is based on applying the boundary integral method in a new numerical algorithm. There are two main topics of the analysis herein. The first one is to study the direct effect of the cyclic boundary temperature on the movement of the moving boundary for various Stefan numbers. The second one is check that the proposed method covers all possible cases of cyclic boundary temperature with respect to the phase change temperature.

Findings

When using the proposed method, it is found an easy mathematical manipulation and the results can be improved when fine time step size used.

Originality/value

The proposed method is a very new method, which can be applied to any case of moving boundary phase change problem subject to any case of cyclic boundary temperature. Also the proposed method takes into consideration different parameters that affect directly on the evolution of the moving boundary such as Stefan number, etc.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect a variety of different boundary layers have on a wing in ground‐effect.

Design/methodology/approach

Experiments were carried out in the University of Southampton's 3′×2′ wind tunnel. A variable length splitter plate was designed and manufactured in order to generate four boundary‐layer thicknesses at a selected measurement position. A single element inverted GA(W)‐1 aerofoil was then introduced to the flow at varying heights above the plate. Laser Doppler anemometry (LDA) and surface static pressure measurements (both on the aerofoil surface and on the splitter plate) were recorded.

Findings

The flow beneath the wing is found to be affected considerably by the presence of the boundary layer. As the boundary‐layer thickness is increased, the under‐wing pressure is observed to increase, hence resulting in decreased suction. Further, the LDA results indicate a modification to the wake profile. In particular, at low wing heights, the wake is observed to become entrained in the boundary layer, to differing degrees dependant on the boundary layer present and the wing height.

Research limitations/implications

The acquisition of force values from the tests will have allowed further understanding of the “real world” implications of the presence of the boundary‐layer thicknesses on a wing in ground‐effect but this is not possible in the test facility used.

Practical implications

The aerodynamics of a wing in ground‐effect are of great interest for both lifting surfaces for aircraft and downforce generation in motorsport applications. The implications of this paper enhance the importance of understanding the boundary conditions present when wind tunnel testing for these applications.

Originality/value

Although the influence of the boundary layer on low ground clearance objects has been well documented, the methods used here, in particular the use of the pressure tapped splitter plate and LDA, allow a further insight into the explanations behind this influence.

Abstract

An algorithm is presented for creating a flexible boundary to analyse three‐dimensional assemblies of spheres. It can be used to study localization phenomena in particulate materials. The boundary is composed of adjoining triangular plate elements which are connected at their corners to the centres of neighbouring spheres. The applied external boundary stresses create traction forces on the plates, which are distributed among the plates’ particles. The boundary performed favourably in tests on a large assembly of particles when only contact and rotational damping were used. Plane strain compression tests on assemblies with flexible and periodic boundaries revealed a lower strength with the former. This result could be due to the greater restraint on particle movements produced by periodic boundaries or to the early development of a column buckling failure pattern of the assembly with flexible boundaries. No shear bands were observed in the assembly.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe the micro fluid flow analysis in a micro thruster of micro‐/nano‐ satellite propulsion system and to propose the algorithm for the fluid flow simulations with the open boundary based on moving boundary method.

Design/methodology/approach

The analysis is based on a finite volume moving boundary method. Underlying mathematical model is the system of Navier‐Stokes‐Fourier partial differential equation describing compressible gas model. Propellant under the study is pure nitrogen gas. First, the static geometry velocity vector field is calculated and the information of the velocity at the outflow boundary is obtained; then, with the moving boundary method the outlet boundary is evolved. Evolution of the boundary is stopped when the continuum model ceases to hold. The criteria of the continuum model failure are based on the local Knudsen number.

Findings

The validations of the flow with respect to the Knudsen number showed that the continuum model is valid in the nozzle interior part (from the pressure value to the nozzle throat). The exterior nozzle part (diverging side) showed immediate raising of the Knudsen number above the continuum threshold (0.01). For the overall accurate computations of thruster flow, the continuum model must be coupled with molecular model (i.e. Boltzmann BGK).

Originality/value

In this paper, the authors propose a method for the computation of an open boundary flow with the application of the moving boundary method.
