Abstract

In Beijing, urban agriculture (UA) experienced a corkscrew development with its role changing in decades: It has evolved from the purely production mode to multi-functional urban agriculture, fulfilling both social and ecological demands. At present, the practice of UA as well as the number of rural to urban migrants is growing rapidly in peri-urban Beijing. Through Multi-stakeholder Process for Action planning and Policy Design (MPAP) methodology and four in-depth case studies, we can see that UA activities are playing very important roles in reshaping peri-urban Beijing. Socially, UA induces the emergence of new migrant communities. While migrants rebuild their social network, they are changed by the city as well, which has also changed the local community. The new comers are on their way to creating a new balance. Physically, urban and peri-urban farmland limits urban sprawl, supplies agricultural products for everyday life, and reserves urban green spaces for recreation and leisure for citizens in Beijing, which has changed the landscape and land use and land cover (LUCC) pattern greatly. Under Beijing's land policy, the concentric configuration spatial allocation through multi-functional UA is formed, which at the same time due to migrants' UA activities are creating harmful and low efficient land use pattern which should be of concern.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify the design elements of environmental features that affect consumer experience in shopping malls and develop a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between architectural design and consumer experience.

Design/methodology/approach

Through the systematic literature review, 13 design elements were obtained and then verified through interviews of 30 professional designers. The obtained elements were made into a questionnaire to collect data across China from 1,016 consumers of different groups. Data were analyzed using cluster analysis, principal component analysis and difference analysis.

Findings

The results show that design elements that influence consumer experience in shopping malls are a four-dimensional construct: visual atmosphere, physical environment comfort, space structure and business planning, among which space structure and business planning play a larger role in the consumer experience. In addition, the perception differences of consumers for those elements are significant due to the individual differences.

Originality/value

This paper comprehensively investigates the architectural design elements affecting consumer experience in the Chinese mall context. Moreover, it provides unique insights about the relationship between architectural design and consumer experience by exploring the categories, weights and perception differences of those elements.

Abstract

Purpose

Continua and discontinua coexist in natural rock materials. This paper aims to present an improved approach for addressing the mechanical response of rock masses based on the combined finite-discrete element method (FDEM) proposed by Munjiza.

Design/methodology/approach

Several algorithms have been programmed in the new approach. The algorithms include (1) a simpler and more efficient algorithm to calculate the contact force; (2) An algorithm for tangential contact force closer to the actual physical process; (3) a plastic yielding criterion (e.g. Mohr-Coulomb) to modify the elastic stress for fitting the mechanical behavior of elastoplastic materials; and (4) a complete code for the mechanical calculation to be implemented in Matrix Laboratory (MATLAB).

Findings

Three case studies, including two standard laboratory experiments (uniaxial compression and Brazilian split test) and one engineering-scale anti-dip slop model, are presented to illustrate the feasibility of the Y-Mat code and its ability to deal with multi-scale rock mechanics problems. The results, including the progressive failure process, failure mode and trajectory of each case, are acceptable compared to other corresponding studies. It is shown that, the code is capable of modeling geotechnical and geological engineering problems.

Originality/value

This article gives an improved FDEM-based numerical calculation code. And, feasibility of the code is verified through three cases. It can effectively solve the geotechnical and geological engineering problems.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to propose a method for accurate radar echo simulation of wind turbines (WTs) array. It can solve the problem of passive interference from wind farms to neighboring radar stations.

Design/methodology/approach

First of all, the equivalent model of scattering centers of a single WT is obtained by using the spatial spectrum estimation method, and the accuracy of this model is verified by the scaled model experiment; then scattering centers model of WTs array was established by using the spatial coordinate transformation method. According to the position relationship between the model and the radar, and combined with the multipath scattering theory, the radar echo equation of WTs array was deduced. Finally, the simulation analysis is carried out with the four GoldWind 77/1500 WTs as an example and compared with the traditional methods.

Findings

This paper verifies the accuracy of the equivalent model of scattering centers through the WT scaled model experiment, and through simulation analysis, it is found that the result of this method is more consistent with the multipath scattering of radar echo between WTs array in practical engineering than the traditional method.

Originality/value

Based on the theory of high-frequency scattering, this paper introduces scattering centers into the solution of radar echo and considers the multipath scattering of radar echo, then a method for solving the radar echo of WTs array based on scattering centers is proposed.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to show that the environmental income drives economic growth of a large open country.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors detect that the relative environmental income has double effect of “conspicuous consumption” on the international renewable resource stock changes when a new social norm shapes to environmental-friendly behaviors by using normal macroeconomic approaches.

Findings

Every unit of extra demand for renewable resource consumption increases the net premium of domestic capital asset. Even if the technology spillovers are inefficient to the substitution of capital to labor force in a real business cycle, the relative income with scale effect increases drives savings to investment. In this case, the renewable resource consumption promotes both the reproduction to a higher level and saving the potential cost of environmental improvement. Even if without scale effects, the loss of technology inefficient can be compensated by net positive consumption externality for economic growth in a sustainable manner.

Research limitations/implications

It implies how to earn the environment income determines the future pathway of China’s rural conversion to the era of eco-urbanization.

Originality/value

We test the tax incidence to demonstrate an experimental taxation for environmental improvement ultimately burdens on international consumption side.

To provide an approach to fleXBGA design and reliability analysis.

Abstract

Purpose

To provide an approach to fleXBGA design and reliability analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

A two‐dimensional (2D) plane strain finite element analysis model is established to simulate the thermo‐mechanical behaviour of fleXBGAs which are subjected to thermo‐cyclic loading under different temperature cycling conditions. The model has been used to consider the effects of printed circuit board (PCB) thickness, die size, package size, ball count, pitch and substrate configuration. The Anand constitutive model is adopted to simulate creep and plastic deformation of the solder joints. A fatigue life prediction model based on plastic shear strain range is then applied to predict the fatigue life of different kinds of fleXBGA.

Findings

Comparison of fatigue life predictions and experiments show that the maximum prediction errors are mostly within ±50 per cent, and it can be concluded that a smaller die size, a thinner PCB, a smaller solder ball diameter, more balls, a smaller temperature range and a faster ramp rate are all helpful in improving the package fatigue life.

Research limitations/implications

Not all properties of the packaging materials are available for design and reliability analysis. Advanced research should be focused on determining the mechanical properties of the packaging materials to improve the analysis accuracy.

Practical implications

Design optimisation was used to determine the effect of structural parameters for the fleXBGA assembly on the von Mises equivalent stresses in the solder joints, which is one of the most critical factors for package reliability. The calculation results indicate that the equivalent stress in solder joints can be decreased about 19.7 per cent comparing with the initial structure and the fatigue life can be greatly enhanced.

Originality/value

The suggested approach is very useful for fleXBGA assembly design. The reliability of the package can be greatly improved by using the modified geometric parameters.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to propose a new model for optimizing pre-joining processes quickly and accurately, guiding workers to standardized operations. For the automatic riveting in panel assemblies, the traditional approach of determination of pre-joining processes entirely rests on the experience of workers, which leads to the improper number, location and sequence of pre-joining, the low quality stability and the high repair rate in most cases.

Design/methodology/approach

The clearances computation with the complete finite element model for every process combination is time-consuming. Therefore a fast pre-joining processes optimization model (FPPOM) is proposed. This model treats both the measured initial clearances and the stiffness matrices of key points of panels as an input; considers the permissive clearances as an evaluation criterion; regards the optimal number, location and sequence as an objective; and takes the neighborhood-search-based adaptive genetic algorithm as a solution.

Findings

A comparison between the FPPOM and complete finite element model with clearances (CFEMC) was made in practice. Further, the results indicate that running the FPPOM is time-saving by >90 per cent compared with the CFEMC.

Practical implications

This paper provides practical insights into realizing the pre-joining processes optimization quickly.

Originality/value

This paper is the first to propose the FPPOM, which could simplify the processes, reduce the degrees of freedom of nodes and conduct the manufacturers to standardized manipulations.

Abstract

While most efforts to combat climate change are focussed on energy efficiency and substitution of fossil fuels, growth in the built environment remains largely unquestioned. Given the current climate emergency and increasing scarcity of global resources, it is imperative that we address this “blind spot” by finding ways to support required services with less resource consumption.

There is now long overdue recognition to greenhouse gas emissions “embodied” in the production of building materials and construction, and its importance in reaching targets of net zero carbon by 2050. However, there is a widespread belief that we can continue to “build big”, provided we incorporate energy saving measures and select “low carbon materials” – ignoring the fact that excessive volume and area of buildings may outweigh any carbon savings. This is especially the case with commercial real estate.

As the inception and planning phases of projects offer most potential for reduction in both operational and embodied carbon, we must turn our attention to previously overlooked options such as “build nothing” or “build less”. This involves challenging the root cause of the need, exploring alternative approaches to meet desired outcomes, and maximising the use of existing assets. If new build is required, this should be designed for adaptability, with increased stewardship, so the building stock of the future will be a more valuable and useable resource.

This points to the need for increased understanding and application of the principles of strategic asset management, hitherto largely ignored in sustainability circles, which emphasize a close alignment of assets with the services they support.

Arguably, as the built environment consumes more material resources and energy than any other sector, its future configuration may be critical to the future of people and the planet. In this regard, this paper seeks to break new ground for deeper exploration.
