The capacitated lot sizing problem (CLSP) is one of the most important production planning problems which has been widely studied in lot sizing literature. The CLSP is the extension of the Wagner-Whitin problem where there is one product and no capacity constraints. The CLSP involves determining lot sizes for multiple products on a single machine with limited capacity that may change for each planning period. Determining the right lot sizes has a critical importance on the productivity and success of organizations. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

This study focuses on the CLSP with setup carryover and backordering. The literature focusing on this problem is rather limited. To fill this gap, a number of problem-specific heuristics have been integrated with fix-and-optimize (FOPT) heuristic in this study. The authors have compared the performances of the proposed approaches to that of the commercial solver and recent results in literature. The obtained results have stated that the proposed approaches are efficient in solving this problem.

The computational experiments have shown that the proposed approaches are efficient in solving this problem.

To address the solution of the CLSP with setup carryover and backordering, a number of heuristic approaches consisting of FOPT heuristic are proposed in this paper.

This chapter has two focal points. First, it concentrates on the increasing impact of climate change on human mobility, emphasising the most vulnerable regions and populations. Second, it introduces the concept of ‘nexus dynamics’, which primarily refers to the entanglement of climate change and disasters with political, economic and social factors.

This chapter delves into adaptation options broadly classified as structural/physical, institutional and social. Building upon these, it focusses on adaptation forms: autonomous versus planned, reactive versus proactive, short run versus long run, private versus public and incremental versus transformational. In doing so, it draws attention to the complexity of climate change adaptation.

Purpose – Generally speaking this chapter examines if Max Weber's theory of the protestant ethic helps explain socioeconomic progress currently seen in some communities in Latin America where Protestantism has advanced rapidly.

Methodology/approach – This chapter is a case study. It reviews the literature on San Pedro de Almolonga, a small indigenous town in western Guatemala, and presents the results of our ethnographic fieldwork in the town and its surroundings during January 2011.

Findings – Almolonga has become a very prosperous town through the production and commercialization of vegetables. Prosperity has emerged due to the high fertility of the soil, the entrepreneurial skills of its inhabitants, and the high market demand for vegetables. Protestantism has been an almost perfect complement that has made possible the maximization of Almolonga's economic potential.
