Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to explore potential witnesses' memories for a day that was experienced an unremarkable. There may be instances in an investigation in which all leads have been exhausted, and investigators use a broad appeal for witnesses who may have witnessed something important. Investigators can benefit from knowing the types of information that may be recalled in such circumstances, as well as identifying specific methods that are effective in eliciting useful information.

Design/methodology/approach

The present study explored how the delay to recall and recall method influenced the recollection of a seemingly unremarkable day that later became important. Participants were asked to recall an experienced event that occurred either recently (a few weeks prior) or in the distant past (a year prior). Participants recalled via either a written method, in-person individual-spoken or collaborative-spoken interviews.

Findings

Results suggest an independent benefit for individual-spoken in-person recall (compared to written or collaborative-spoken recall) and recall undertaken closely after an event (compared to delayed recall). Both individual-spoken interviews as well as more recent recollection resulted in a greater number of overall details recalled. The authors further examined the types of details recalled that might be important to progressing an investigation (e.g. other witnesses and records).

Originality/value

The present work provides important implications for interviewing witnesses about a seemingly unremarkable event that later became important.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to delve into perceived underqualification, which refers to employees’ awareness that they have deficient abilities relative to their job demands (abilities<demands). In examining person–job (P–J) misfit, previous research has primarily focused on one type of misfit, overqualification (abilities>demands), leaving the other type, underqualification, unexplored. To address the neglect, this study investigates how perceived underqualification relates to job attitudes (job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and turnover intention) and how transformational leadership moderates the relationships.

Design/methodology/approach

Survey data were collected from employees working at diverse organizations in South Korea over two waves; at Time 1, perceived underqualification and transformational leadership were measured and at Time 2, job attitude variables were measured. Responses from 188 employees were used for hypothesis testing.

Findings

Perceived underqualification is negatively related to job satisfaction and organizational commitment and positively related to turnover intention when transformational leadership is low. However, under high transformational leadership, such negative attitudinal implications of perceived underqualification are weakened.

Originality/value

By examining underqualification for the first time, this study corrects the current incomplete and biased understanding of P–J misfit, which is exclusively overqualification-focused. In addition, this study provides new insight into individual responses to P–J misfit by revealing that the responses are not always negative. This study specifies transformational leadership as the contingency factor that enables such responses, thus further advancing the P–J misfit literature that has hardly examined the leadership effect.

Abstract

Purpose: The psychological contract involves expectations and responsibilities from both employees and organizations. Recently, arguments have emerged that link employee expectations to increasing individual entitlement beliefs which may not involve reciprocity. Equity theory suggests that employees continually assess their personal outcomes for fairness and that these equity perceptions could be affected by entitlement beliefs. The question that then arises is, how do entitled employees pursue these unmet beliefs and what are the implications if these beliefs are met or unmet? Approach: In this chapter, we present a conceptual model proposing that emotion regulation motives (instrumental or hedonic) influence how employees with unmet entitlement beliefs seek to advance their claims. Using equity theory as an underpinning theory, we conceptualize that instrumental and hedonic emotion regulation motives lead to different job satisfaction levels. We also argue that actual job performance moderates this relationship. Originality/Value: Understanding this process is essential as managers may constantly deal with employee entitlement beliefs, and low job satisfaction has been linked to poor employee and organizational outcomes. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Abstract

Large-scale organizational change, such as seen through mergers and acquisitions, CEO succession, and corporate entrepreneurship, sometimes is necessary in order to allow firms to be competitive. However, such change can be unsettling to existing employees, producing considerable uncertainty, conflict, politics, and stress, and thus, must be managed very carefully. Unfortunately, to date, little research has examined the relationships among change efforts, perceptions of political environments, and employee stress reactions. We introduce a conceptual model that draws upon sensemaking theory and research to explain how employees perceive and interpret their uncertain environments, the politics in them, and the resulting work stress, after large-scale organizational change initiatives. Implications of our proposed conceptualization are discussed, as are directions for future research.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper seeks to situate the green economy (GE) within the broader history of sustainable development (SD), bringing related lessons and insights into its fold.

Methodology/approach

We critically examine the history of SD, focusing on the relationship between SD outcomes and a variety of theoretical and political influences, such as demodernization theories, ecological modernization, neoliberalism, and state theory. We situate the GE within this broader history and identify emergent pathways to successful GE development.

Findings

We suggest that a strong GE discourse, one that prioritizes both people and the environment, provides an opportunity to revitalize the state, combat neoliberal primacy, and drive progressive economic and environmental policy.

Practical implications

A critical examination of SD history can provide important lessons for GE actors seeking progressive social and environmental change.

Originality/value

As social and environmental crises deepen, the need for developing and propagating discourses that engender economic reform and ecological protection becomes ever more evident.
