Abstract

During the post-globalization period, tariff imposition on manufacturing trade has a possible effect on the economy of developed and developing nations. Along with the volume and balance of trade, the study accounts for both export and import separately in order to observe their dynamisms under the tariff regime and makes comparisons between developing and developed countries. Using the World Development Indicators and World Integrated Trade Solution databases of World Bank (2020) on China (developing nation) and the United States (developed nation) over the period of 1970–2019, the co-integration tests and thereafter vector error correction models indicate that the relationship between tariff and manufacturing trade is positive and statistically significant.

Abstract

The dynamic effect of globalization on socio-economic disparity measured by the income inequality is always a noteworthy issue of research interests. Globalization is mostly appreciated from the aspect of economic growth, but it has been blamed for influencing the imperfect competition, environmental degradation, economic inequality, etc. Under this backdrop, this chapter seeks to examine the impacts of international trade and informational globalization on income inequality in both developing and developed groups of nations of the world using dynamic panel Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimates. The results of first difference dynamic panel GMM estimates imply the analogous impacts of trade and informational globalization on income inequality in both developing and developed groups of nations. However, the financial and political measures of globalization have dissimilar effects on income inequality across developing and developed economies.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the governance of external entities that lie outside the boundaries of digital platform firms by using the theoretical lens of the transaction cost theory (TCT). TCT offers alternative modes of governance for effectively managing transactions in market, hierarchy or hybrid scenarios providing a perfect framework to study platform governance.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper explores governance issues between restaurant partners and online food delivery platforms in India via qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews of various stakeholders, including restaurant partners and platform managers.

Findings

The study reveals that information asymmetry, opportunism, control and trust deficit are the major strategic governance issues in online food delivery platforms.

Research limitations/implications

Though care had been taken to cover all types of restaurants, due to lockdown number of restaurants studied was restricted in number. Despite the restrictions, findings provided valuable insights into the governance issues of the digital platform. Challenging times like Covid-19 make the study even more crucial from the strategic perspective. The study also adds to the literature on platform governance and provides practical implications for account managers and policymakers.

Practical implications

The study uncovers various critical governance issues. These, if resolved using the right combination of governance mechanisms, will lead to increased partner participation and value creation on the platform.

Originality/value

Platforms outsource the value creation to external entities without having any hierarchical control over partners. The paper studies governance outside the boundaries of the firm using TCT. Hence, it helps to extend governance outside the boundaries of the firm.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the unsteady mixed convection along an exponentially stretching surface in presence of transverse magnetic field applied at the wall and the opposing buoyancy flow.

Design/methodology/approach

The dimensional partial differential equations governing the flow field are transformed to non-dimensional coupled partial differential equations with the aid of suitable non-similar transformations. The resulting equations are then solved by the coalition of quasilinearization technique and the finite difference method.

Findings

Effects of volumetric heat source/sink, suction/blowing and other dimensionless parameters on velocity and temperature profiles are examined numerically. This investigation reveals that in presence of opposing buoyancy flow, the suction and volumetric heat source enhances the skin-friction coefficient, while the rise in the MHD increases the momentum boundary layer.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, no such investigation has been carried out in the literature.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to provide a detailed study on the influence of slip flow and thermal jump over mixed convection flow along an exponentially stretching surface. Also, impacts of suction/blowing, volumetric heat source/sink and velocity ratio parameter will be studied in this analysis.

Design/methodology/approach

The modeled governing equations for the assumed problem are dimensional nonlinear partial differential equations in nature. To reduce these equations, non-similar transformations are used to get the dimensionless nonlinear partial differential equations. Then, quasi-linearization technique is used to linearize these non-dimensional nonlinear partial differential equations. Finally, an implicit finite difference scheme is used to discretize the resulting equations.

Findings

The physical explanations are provided for the variations of various non-dimensional governing parameters over the velocity and temperature profiles. Also, the effects of these dimensionless parameters on skin friction coefficient and heat transfer rate are scrutinized in a manner which highlights their physical interpretation. The detailed discussion exhibits the fact that the streamwise co-ordinate velocity ratio parameter, partial slip parameter and the thermal jump parameter have significant influence over the flow and thermal fields.

Originality/value

This work has not been reported in the literature to the authors’ best of knowledge.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the combined effects of thermal radiation and activation energy with a chemical reaction on the quadratic convective flow of a micropolar fluid over an inclined plate. Convective thermal boundary condition and suction/injection effects are considered at the surface of an inclined plate.

Design/methodology/approach

The convection along with nonlinear Boussinesq approximation (i.e. quadratic convection or nonlinear convection) and usual boundary layer assumptions is employed in the mathematical formulation. Highly coupled nonlinear governing equations are tackled by a combined local non-similarity and successive linearization techniques.

Findings

The behavior of various pertinent parameters on the fluid flow characteristics is conferred through graphs and it reveals that the qualitative behaviors of velocity, temperature, skin friction and heat transfer rates of a micropolar fluid are similar for Biot number and radiation parameters. The suction/injection and activation energy parameters increase the concentration of the micropolar fluid within the boundary layer, while the chemical reaction parameter reduces the concentration in the same region. Further, this quadratic convection shows a strong influence on the fluid flow characteristics and then the impact of pertinent parameters is more prominent on the physical quantities, compared therewith results of the linear convection.

Practical implications

This kind of investigation is useful in the mechanism of combustion, aerosol technology, high-temperature polymeric mixtures and solar collectors which are operated at moderate to very high temperatures.

Originality/value

This attempt is a unique contribution to the establishment of both micropolar fluid and activation energy. This kind of study even in the absence of quadratic convection is not yet noted.
