Abstract

Purpose

Scholars have increasingly researched on how the uprise of Technologies 4.0 will alter the way in which the tourism destinations, the hospitality and tourism sector will operate. Research points out to the fact that the massive digital transformation can lead to a human-centric experience design perspective which is against the principles of tourism sustainable development. In fact, one of today's challenges is predicting how destinations can use immersive digital experiences like metaverse to instill sustainable behaviours. Bearing that in mind, in this chapter, one first explores the concept of metaverse in general and after in the context of tourism destinations management organisations, showing that metaverse that seeks to turn imagination into reality using a panoply of technologies should be seen as the perfect mean for sustainable tourism.

Design/Methodology/Approach

The study proposes a conceptual framework to create an understanding of metaverse experiences envisioning sustainable practices.

Findings

Finally, one identifies research gaps and proposes an agenda with the potential of benefiting destination's management organisations. Furthermore, it was our intent to identify opportunities and challenges involving the use of metaverse with sustainable ends by tourism destination management organisations.

Originality/Values

This study assumes that metaverse can be used by destination management organisations to educate potential ‘tourists’ by providing to them innovative educational environments where they can ‘live’ all sorts of non-human-centric sustainable experiences. With that intent, a model for the implementation of metaverse was created with its foundations on current experiments happening worldwide.

Abstract

In today's world, events are used as a mean to achieve an array of objectives including changing behaviours. This chapter asserts the importance of marketing in encouraging sustainable behaviours by children through events. Thus, it examines the most effective way of marketing to contribute to shift behaviours in a young age having events as an ally. The question that poses is how marketing and more specifically social marketing can help to plan, create, design and promote sustainable events for children. Bearing that in mind, and based on a semi-systematic literature review, one developed a comprehensive conceptual framework intending to show how it is possible to encourage sustainable children's behaviour through events. Results suggest that social marketing can play a significant role in changing children's behaviour towards sustainability. It is argued that there is a creation of ‘value’ even that behaviour change is only temporary. Furthermore, it is suggested that social marketing represents a viable approach when seeking to educate children and change their behaviours towards the adoption of more sustainable practices. This chapter advances theoretical knowledge by offering a conceptual framework and by suggesting a way forward in marketing sustainable events for children.

Abstract

Cuba’s 1959 Revolution brought about dramatic changes not only in that island‐nation but also in the USA. Cubans, and later Cuban‐Americans, have changed the face of Miami and south Florida. The economic and social successes of Cuban‐Americans, the third largest Latino group in the USA, are prevalent in scholarly and popular literature. In this annotated bibliography, the author presents journal articles, chapters in books, books, and human rights reports, published between 1990 and 1998, as well as World Wide Web sites, that discuss the Cuban‐American experience. Articles from the popular literature are not included, nor are materials that deal primarily with Cuba or Cuba‐USA relations.

Abstract

Purpose

Agribusiness has stood out in the economy sector as a form of countryside-city interaction due to its productive chain characterized by modernization coming from cities, especially in the industrial area. Thus, the present study analyzed corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the context of agribusiness, based on a survey of articles published in the Scopus database. The main objective of the research is to analyze whether the agribusiness sector has incorporated CSR into its internal policy.

Design/methodology/approach

For this, the methodology used was researching through a systematic literature review, in which 14,720 documents on CSR were found. When restricting the search for CSR in agribusiness, 44 articles were found, and it was noticed that three were based on analysis in Latin America, which were the object of the study.

Findings

From this, it was realized that the literature on the subject is scarce, but of fundamental importance for its adoption in the sector, as it brings economic and environmental benefits not only to companies but also to society as a whole.

Research limitations/implications

Although CSR is not yet the total solution to socioeconomic and environmental problems, it can be used as a strategy for raising companies’ awareness, based on the development of an organizational environmental culture, which brings competitive advantages over competitors who adopt them.

Originality/value

The topic of CSR is a recent discussion in the academic field, which is why it has few studies. Thus initially, we sought to analyze it in the scenario in Latin America, as presented in the present work. However, as a future stage of research in the area of CSR, this topic will be analyzed as an academic master’s degree in the context of the BRIC countries.

Abstract

The increase of foreign investment in industrial activities has accelerated the restructuring of production and new ways of managing the workforce in Brazil, especially in the car industry. Based on the investigation of new auto plants in Rio de Janeiro state in the 1990s, this text intends to bring more arguments to a general discussion about the relationship between the global and the local, emphasizing the point of view of localities that receive foreign direct investments, and suggesting that transnational companies benefit from the conditions offered to attract investments, but also stimulate the creation of new political and economical structures that may produce new forms of participation from local and regional political actors.
