Abstract

Purpose

Poor quality of services in the health-care sector of the developing countries like Bangladesh forces affluent patients to seek advanced medical treatment from abroad. The purpose of this study is to explore the outbound medical tourists’ satisfaction and loyalty on the basis of the quality of the health-care service provided by foreign medical institutions.

Design/methodology/approach

The medical tourists from Bangladesh who have got medical services from Indian medical institutions were taken as a sample by applying a purposive sampling technique. For the measurement of outbound medical tourists’ satisfaction, the dimensions of the HEALTHQUAL model were adopted. A self-administrated questionnaire was the major tool for collecting data from the respondents. Using partial least square-structural equation model multivariate statistical technique and with the aid of SmartPLS software, primary data collected from 218 final respondents were analyzed.

Findings

The findings of this study reveal that four dimensions of the HEALTHQUAL model, namely, empathy, tangibility, efficiency, and safety have a significant positive impact on building medical tourists’ overall satisfaction, and then the overall satisfaction also has a positive level of significance on building loyalty towards foreign medical service providers.

Practical implications

The findings of this study can be a helpful instrument for the developing countries to rethink and reshuffle their own existing health-care system for providing quality medical services and at the same time, the medical tourists importing countries to sharpen their existing service quality as well as to attract more medical tourists in the future.

Originality/value

A handful of research has been carried out, especially focused on health-care service quality measurement and the relationship of health-care service quality with satisfaction and loyalty from the perspective of developing countries outbound medical tourists. Thus, this research work will give a flavor to think of health-care service quality in a different dimension.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the relations between employee corporate social responsibility (CSR) attitudes on job satisfaction (JS) and organizational commitment (OC) in the context of Bangladeshi banks in the developing world. Specifically, it examines the relationship of CSR attitudes with the three diverse aspects of OC: affective OC, normative OC and continuance OC.

Design/methodology/approach

Comparisons are made via survey data obtained from 502 employees of two banks in Bangladesh using structural equation modeling analysis. The research instrument in four sections illustrates the most common measures in the literature used to evaluate the constructs and their interrelations according to the proposed conceptual model of the study.

Findings

The outcomes of the study reveal that there is a positive relationship between employee CSR attitudes, and both JS and OC. In addition to establishing a relationship between CSR attitudes and “Affective OC”, this study also found a relationship with “Normative OC”, which is less common in the existing literature.

Research limitations/implications

The limitations of the study mostly revolve around sample and social desirability. To further test the generalizability and cross-sectional validity of the outcomes, it is suggested that the proposed framework be tested in several other industrial/service sectors of developing countries.

Practical implications

The findings of the present research encourage companies in the developing world to adopt CSR practices to increase rates of JS and OC.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the literature on CSR and positive workplace outcomes, specifically in the developing world context. Additionally, and unlike past research, the results show the significant effect of employee CSR attitudes on both affective OC and normative OC.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is statistical analysis for the democracy index data of 167 countries for the period 2006 to 2012 to investigate whether democracy index is progressing day by day? Does democracy make any significant improvement in public life and public trust in political institutions? What are the implications for future progress of democracy? Democracy index is a measure of democratic performance introduced by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). The EIU calculated democracy index since 2006 for 167 countries covering almost the entire population of the world.

Design/methodology/approach

As democracy index varies from country to country and over time, the author considers randomized complete bock design for the analysis of variance to test whether there are significant variations among the countries and between time (years). The author also applied Friedman’s test, which is a non-parametric distribution-free test.

Findings

It was found that democracy did not make any significant progress in the study period. Popular confidence in political institutions continues to decline in many full democratic countries. Violence and drug-trafficking have a negative impact on democracy in some countries. Some countries had democratic progress, while some other countries had regression. However, these changes in democratic performances are not statistically significant. As a result, democracy becomes stagnant all over the world.

Research limitations/implications

The analysis is based on only five years of available data.

Practical implications

As democracy becomes stagnant all over the world and the public trust on political institutions and politicians is declining, it is essential to find out the root cause.

Social implications

Democracy is a popular alternative to hybrid or authoritarian regimes, but the nations’ recent democratic transitions had brought no improvements to their lives in the society. God has created us in this world with the rest of creation for a very good reason which was explained in all main religious books. To increase our honesty, character, trust and understanding for becoming a good human, we should follow the divine rules and guidance. Eventually everything will work properly, including democracy.

Originality/value

The author analyzed democracy index data produced by the EIU using statistical techniques, analysis of variance and non-parametric Friedman’s test. Statistical analysis, discussion and conclusion are the author ' s contribution.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to compare and contrast alternative pension plans in the market place and their status as zakatable wealth or property. These plans differ in terms of who is responsible for providing funds for pension benefit to the retirees upon retirement and who is responsible for bearing investment risk. Whether a pension plan is subject to zakat immediately or upon receipt at retirement depends on immediate accessibility to and ownership of the funds in the account. It makes no difference whether employer and/or the employee is (are) responsible for funding the plan and who bears the investment risk.

Design/methodology/approach

Descriptive and analytical methods were used.

Findings

There is consensus among Muslim jurists and shariah scholars that mandatory retirement plans offered as a part of compensation and benefit package for a job are subject to zakat when money is received upon retirement and non-mandatory plans offered as replacement for or supplement to employer-sponsored plans with voluntary employee participation are subject to zakat in each year of employment.

Originality/value

There is no prior research work in the extant literature examining zakatability of alternative retirement plans offered in the US marketplace. This paper fills this void and provides a comprehensive survey and analysis of all available retirement plans and their treatment with respect to zakat.

Abstract

This chapter examines corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices by Islamic banks (IBs) in Bangladesh and to identify how these initiatives impact on citizens in a positive and a productive manner without compromising the ethics and values. CSR data and the information of seven IBs in Bangladesh were considered to analyse sector-wise CSR expenditures, as well as in the specialised areas focussing on religious values, from 2007–2010. Results indicate that most of the IBs are committed to CSR practice. This may motivate conventional banks to spend more on CSR to compete with their counterparts. Consequently, the total inflow of resources from the banks towards social wellbeing may also increase. The study finds that IBs share some common areas in conducting CSR activities similar to their conventional counterparts. IBs are also engaged in some additional areas due to their mandatory compliance with the shari’ah. The study finds a significantly increasing trend of CSR expenditures and engagements by IBs.
