Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to explore the factors for self-help groups (SHGs) women empowerment in the state of Uttar Pradesh using the primary data.

Design/methodology/approach

The primary data have been collected by a household survey in the four districts of Uttar Pradesh. Factor analysis is used to estimate the odd of improving women empowerment after participating in SHG.

Findings

Factor analysis extracted four factors which were economic development, improvement in family matters, decision to use public amenities and political empowerment. Also, analysis of variance and t-test was used employing SPSS. The results, therefore, show that education has a significant impact on all the aspects of SHGs people.

Practical implications

The findings of the study can help policymakers to adopt appropriate policies that integrate empowerment in development projects with women.

Social implications

The results of this research could encourage more women to participate in SHG activities and development projects.

Originality/value

This research provides the most updated data from a primary survey in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Abstract

Purpose

The study, grounded on the social cognitive career theory, seeks to analyze the upshot of psychological empowerment on career satisfaction via affective commitment. The study also aims to examine the impact of the interplay among affective commitment and resilience on the career satisfaction of Indian service industry professionals.

Design/methodology/approach

In this study, the data has been collected from 277 employees using standardized measures from the North Indian service industry. To test the proposed model, Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS) (Hayes, 2013) was utilized.

Findings

The outcomes of the study offered substantial support for the theorized link between psychological empowerment, affective commitment, resilience and career satisfaction. The outcomes confirmed an affirmative association concerning psychological empowerment and career satisfaction through affective commitment as a mediator and resilience as a moderator. The study concludes that the workforce with extraordinary resilience will perceive a stronger influence of psychological empowerment on career satisfaction.

Practical implications

The study offers a few pertinent inputs for the organizations operating in high-power distance culture to comprehend the role of psychological empowerment and “resilient attributes” of personality in developing a sense of career satisfaction amongst Indian service sector employees.

Originality/value

The present research examines the association between psychological empowerment, affective commitment, resilience and career satisfaction for the first time as mediated moderation model and the same has neither been examined theoretically or empirically.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the specific legislative and judicial approaches of each of the BRICS countries toward recourse to public policy exception in the context of recognition and enforcement of foreign arbitral awards. Further, it points out the critical areas which need immediate attention to make these countries attractive destinations for parking of investments by international parties.

Design/methodology/approach

The study is a conceptual paper that provides knowledge of the critical areas which needs immediate attention to make BRICS countries attractive destinations for parking of investments by international parties. The first part of the paper examines a guide map to the international business community to devise their dispute adjudication strategies before committing investments in any of BRICS economies. The second part examined the variegated notions of the concept of public policy exception and the existence of differences in judicial approaches. The next parts analyzed the specific legislative and judicial approaches of each of BRICS countries toward recourse to public policy.

Findings

The BRICS countries need to spell out the universal principles applicable to construing the notion of public policy. It would reduce conflicts between national laws and help the municipal courts in determining the issue of enforceability of foreign awards by reference to a common yardstick. Hence, until a harmonized approach to public policy toward foreign awards is developed at an international level, the BRICS countries may take initiative to set up an inter-regional arbitration council to resolve intricate cases occurring in the field of application of public policy exception to foreign arbitral awards.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to study the co-integration among the stock markets of BRIC nations of Brazil, Russia, Indian and China to analyze if the series move apart or they move together in the long term. and to examine the implied volatility transmission between the Indian implied volatility index and three international indices and vice-versa by using synchronized daily data by using techniques such as generalized impulse response functions and variance decompositions. More specifically, the authors investigate how shock to one volatility index affects another volatility index and what is the magnitude and sign of affect and how long does the effect persist?

Design/methodology/approach

Unit root tests are conducted to determine the order of integration for each index. The cointegration analysis is used to evaluate the co-movement of a long-term equilibrium relationship among the four stock market indices. Variance decomposition test helps to explain that how much movement in the dependent variable is explained due to its own shock vis-a-vis to the shock of other variables under the study. Impulse response function is used to find out the impact of the standard deviation of shock given to one variable on the impact on the other variable.

Findings

There exists one long-run cointegrating relationship between the four stock markets under study. The coefficient of VECM is −0.00031 which is negative and highly significant at 1 per cent. This confirms the existence of a stable long-run causal relationship between the variables. Variance decomposition shows that indices of Brazil, China and Russia can explain on average 4, 0.5 and 5 per cent, respectively, of the forecast error variance of Indian index. On the other hand, Indian market can explain on an average 6.7, 5 and 3 per cent of the forecast error of Brazilian, Chinese and Russian markets, respectively.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to examine the various features and components of web‐based online public access catalogues (OPACs) of IIT libraries in India with the help of a specially designed evaluation checklist.

Design/methodology/approach

The various features of the web‐based OPACs in six IIT libraries (IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Guwahati, and IIT Roorkee) are evaluated. The evaluation approach taken was similar to that of Luong and Liew with minor modifications, comprising 122 dichotomous questions with 174 features and categorized as 11 broad categories.

Findings

The study explored different features of web‐based OPACs, of which page layout received the highest average scores with 93.33 percent, followed by the general features category with 90 percent. In contrast, session filters was the weakest category with only 40.47 percent. The results indicated that some web‐based OPACs reached the maximum scores for some categories. The results also indicated that VTLS‐based and LibSys‐based OPACs had the higher score on average (74.7 percent) and the iitKlas‐based OPAC of IITK received the lowest score of 44.2 percent. None were rated excellent. Only 50 percent of the web‐based OPACs studied achieved an above average ranking, of which Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM) had the highest total score (131), and the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK) had the lowest total score (77). Almost all of the web OPACs studied lacked federated search, adjunct thesaurus help and spell check facilities, which seems to raise many questions regarding the facilities provided in the OPAC 2.0 environment of today and hence needs to be addressed as a priority in the subsequent generations of the web‐based OPACs and their development.

Practical implications

It is hoped that the libraries at the IITs will attend to the lacunae and soon develop fully functional web‐based OPACs with Web 2.0 and 3.0 technologies.

Originality/value

The findings of the study will not only guide study librarians and other newly established institutions but also ILMS vendors, so that they can overcome the limitations faced by users and improve their products as OPAC 2.0. This will also help the in‐house web‐based OPACs of IIT Kanpur and IIT Roorkee to compete with other reputed ILMS‐based OPACs.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of the paper is to conduct a comprehensive bibliometric analysis and systematic review to examine the research landscape of women empowerment through participation in self-help groups (SHGs), identifying the eminent contributors, intellectual communities and future research agenda in the field of SHGs and women empowerment.

Design/methodology/approach

The global works of literature related to the theme of SHGs and women empowerment between 1998 and May 6, 2022 were scanned for bibliometric analysis and systematic review. A total of 176 English language documents from the Scopus database were extracted. Bibliometric analysis is conducted using Biblioshiny and VOSviewer software.

Findings

This study finds that SHGs are paramount in achieving rural women’s empowerment multidimensionally. Found that India is the most contributing country with 136 documents, and Ranjula Bali Swain and Fan Yang Wallentin are the most cited authors in the research field of SHGs and women empowerment. In addition, the paper proposes a comprehensive conceptual framework to portray rudimentary antecedents of women’s empowerment achieved through participation in SHGs.

Practical implications

This bibliometric analysis, along with a systematic review demonstrating a framework encapsulating the principal dimensions of women empowerment and their indicators, will be helpful to practitioners, government, policymakers and researchers working in the area of SHGs and women empowerment.

Originality/value

This study recognizes numerous significant contributions by eminent scholars and presents a concise review of the literature for novice researchers working in the area of SHGs and women empowerment.

Abstract

Purpose

As group work is becoming more common in the classroom, teamwork as an andragogical tool continues to be problematic for students in management programs. The purpose of this paper is to determine how university students perceive teamwork and to identify teamwork problems along with potential solutions.

Design/methodology/approach

A triangulation mixed-methods approach was used. In study 1, qualitative data were gathered from a focus group comprising nine students. In study 2, quantitative data were gathered from an online survey completed by 127 students.

Findings

The data were analyzed using content analysis and ordinary least squares regression. The results indicated that free-rider experiences and peer evaluation are two key areas in determining dissatisfaction with teamwork. Teamwork challenges may be addressed via knowledgeable team leaders who balance task and relationship styles, equitable workloads, smaller team sizes, anonymous peer evaluations and the effective use of technology.

Practical implications

The findings are valuable to educators at tertiary-level institutions who utilize teamwork as an andragogical tool.

Originality/value

This study was designed to deepen understanding of university students' dissatisfaction with teamwork in Trinidad and Tobago and provide andragogical improvements that can be implemented to enhance the students' teamwork experience.

Purpose

Virtually unlimited amounts of data collection by cybersecurity systems put people at risk of having their privacy violated. Social networks like Facebook on the Internet provide an overplus of knowledge concerning their users. Although users relish exchanging data online, only some data are meant to be interpreted by those who see value in it. It is now essential for online social network (OSN) to regulate the privacy of their users on the Internet. This paper aims to propose an efficient privacy violation detection model (EPVDM) for OSN.

Design/methodology/approach

In recent months, the prominent position of both industry and academia has been dominated by privateness, its breaches and strategies to dodge privacy violations. Corporations around the world have become aware of the effects of violating privacy and its effect on them and other stakeholders. Once privacy violations are detected, they must be reported to those affected and it's supposed to be mandatory to make them to take the next action. Although there are different approaches to detecting breaches of privacy, most strategies do not have a functioning tool that can show the values of its subject heading. An EPVDM for Facebook, based on a deep neural network, is proposed in this research paper.

Findings

The main aim of EPVDM is to identify and avoid potential privacy breaches on Facebook in the future. Experimental analyses in comparison with major intrusion detection system (IDS) to detect privacy violation show that the proposed methodology is robust, precise and scalable. The chances of breaches or possibilities of privacy violations can be identified very accurately.

Originality/value

All the resultant is compared with well popular methodologies like adaboost (AB), decision tree (DT), linear regression (LR), random forest (RF) and support vector machine (SVM). It's been identified from the analysis that the proposed model outperformed the existing techniques in terms of accuracy (94%), precision (99.1%), recall (92.43%), f-score (95.43%) and violation detection rate (>98.5%).

Abstract

Purpose

Based on the stimulus-organism-response (SOR) model and Transactional Model of Stress and Coping, the current study aims to investigate the direct effects of workplace bullying (WPB) on internal whistleblowing (IW) and workplace withdrawal (WW), as well as the indirect effects, including the mediating role of moral injury (MI) and moderating role of inclusive leadership (IL) in the hospitality sector.

Design/methodology/approach

Three-waves approach was used to collect data from 266 hotel employees in India. AMOS 21 and Macro-PROCESS were used to analyse the hypothesised relationships.

Findings

WPB has a direct effect on IW and workplace withdrawal. MI mediated the relationship between WPB and IW and WPB and WW. Further, IL moderated the relationship between WPB and MI.

Practical implications

The results of the current study have significant policy-related, academic and practical implications. Executives must be aware of WPB incidents and take prompt action to completely stop them.

Originality/value

The study contributes to the literature by analysing the role of MI as a mediator for the relationship between WPB and WPB's coping strategies like IW and workplace withdrawal. This study also answers repeated calls for more research on MI and MI's consequences.
