This chapter uses discourse analysis to explain why entrepreneurship has become a primary response to Africa’s youth employment challenge. It analyses almost 20 years of academic literature and publications from one of the world’s foremost authorities on entrepreneurship: the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM). The study found that youth were positioned within a discourse of entrepreneurial essentialism; where entrepreneurship was narrativised as the only option for youth employment; and youth were framed as entrepreneurship being the natural solution for them. Youth were concurrently framed within numerous contradictory entrepreneurial discourses which were used to elevate and legitimise entrepreneurship as the key pathway for addressing Africa’s youth employment challenge. An important finding in this study was that the dominant model of entrepreneurship being promoted by GEM to address the challenge is a mainly skills-based pathway to self-employment and low-growth microenterprise development. This is concerning for two reasons: firstly, global evidence does not demonstrate much support for such an approach, and secondly, it undermines other responses to youth unemployment, particularly those which seek to address more structural, demand-side barriers to employment.

Perceptions of trust have been identified as an important element in the risk communication process. This research is concerned with establishing the degree of trust the general public has in various possible sources of information about the health effects associated with consuming genetically modified food. Participants were asked directly about the degree to which they would trust information about the health effects associated with consuming genetically modified food from a variety of sources, including a fictitious source included as a control. They were also asked about the degree to which they believed each source had a vested interest in misinforming the public about the possible health effects associated with such consumption, and the degree of knowledge they believed each source had about any possible health effects. The results indicate that perceptions of “vested interest” and “degree of knowledge” are important elements in determining levels of trust, although probably not exhaustive. Furthermore, that younger consumers are likely to be the most responsive audience for risk information, but general audience response to risk information is likely to be influenced by preconceptions about the source of the information, preconceptions that can be derived entirely from the name of the information source.

The popular notion is that securities frauds are a non‐violent, white‐collar variety of criminal enterprise. Not necessarily so in a recent case generally known as Premier Benefit Capital Trust. The main perpetrators of this alleged fraud, when being called to account before a court for their activities, appear to have turned decidedly violent. They are accused of conspiracy to murder the Federal Court judge hearing the case.

I present here a review and critique of social scientific analyses of the global spread of Prosperity Christianity. My argument is that at least two phases of research can be discerned: an initial phase where economic factors are given strong causal explanatory force in accounting for the upsurge in Health and Wealth congregations; and a more recent phase that complicates our understandings of the relationships between religious and economic action. My review of the literature reveals that sacrifice is a theoretical trope common to both phases of writing, and in the latter half of the chapter I explore the ways in which notions of the sacrificial economy can point to nuanced understandings of the forms of materiality deployed in many Prosperity contexts. The wider implications of this chapter refer in part to how we might understand notions of rational and irrational action in relation to economic behavior; and also to an appreciation of the ways in which ritual action can be productive of, and not merely a response to, perceived ambiguity and risk.

A dinner was held at the Café Royal on Tuesday, January 10th to celebrate the completion of forty years' existence by the British Food Journal and the British Analytical Control. A number of eminent people were present, and complimentary references were made to the invaluable services which the Journal and the Control had rendered in assisting in the suppression of adulteration and in giving authentic indication of genuineness.

The National Health Campaign organised by the Ministry of Health and the Board of Education, and assisted by the Central Council for Health Education, was heralded, launched and blessed by the Prime Minister on September 30th. It is to be continued for six months; and in March of next year the National Advisory Council for Physical Training and Recreation will direct public attention to the then existing facilities for such training. In the meantime many local authorities, empowered by the Physical Training and Recreation Act, 1937, will form Local Area Committees and provide, assisted by Government grants, recreation centres and facilities for those of all ages. Therefore His Majesty's Government is making an improvement in national physical fitness a fundamental point of policy.
