Abstract

Purpose

The author investigates the effect of trade protection on domestic firm innovation in China and explores the channel through which trade protection affects corporate innovation.

Design/methodology/approach

Using a sample of Chinese A-share manufacturing companies from 2003 to 2019, the author starts with a univariate analysis by examining the innovation output after trade protection for all samples. The author uses the natural logarithm of one plus the number of trade protection cases received by the industry to which the firm belongs in a particular year to proxy for trade protection.

Findings

The author finds that trade protection significantly encourages firms’ patent application, particularly substantive patents, which is stronger in non-state-owned enterprises. Moreover, the mitigation of financial constraint is plausible channel that allows trade protection to promote innovation.

Practical implications

For practitioners, they should seize the dividends of national policies. In the process of implementing trade protection, they should concentrate on improving their innovation level and enhancing their core competitiveness. When they are not subject to trade protection, they can also make profits and develop in the long run.

Social implications

For policy makers, in the early stage of industry development, trade protection can be used to ease the companies’ financing constraints and improve the companies’ profits, which will help them concentrate their efforts, promote innovation and further develop. However, in the mid-term development of the industry, policy makers should reduce trade protection. Through the entry of foreign capital, companies face increased competition, which can enhance the companies’ motivation for long-term development.

Originality/value

Overall, this paper sheds light on the real effects of trade protection and the determinants of innovation. First, the paper sheds light on the impact of international trade on firms’ innovation. Second, this study also contributes to the emerging literature on the effect of trade policy uncertainty on financial constraint. Third, the paper adds to the stream of literature on the drivers of innovation.

Abstract

Purpose

First, the effect of magnetic field intensity and nano-ferrofluid concentrations on surface roughness was evaluated in magnetic minimum quantity lubrication (MMQL). Then, the effect of lubricant flow rate and nozzle position on surface roughness was investigated in MQL, MMQL, electrostatic MQL (EMQL) and electromagnetic MQL (EMMQL).

Design/methodology/approach

This study examined the performance of MQL under magnetic and electric fields in turning AISI 304 stainless steel in terms of surface roughness and compared the results with those obtained from wet cutting and MQL turning operations. To prepare the nano-ferrofluid used in different states of MQL, Fe3O4 nanoparticles were added to the base fluid.

Findings

The results showed that the surface roughness under the EMMQL technique decreased by 36% and 49.4% on average compared with wet and MQL techniques, respectively. The lubrication technique affected the surface roughness by 90.2%, whereas it was 8.3% for the lubricant flow rate. EMQL and EMMQL techniques had no significant difference in their effects on surface roughness. In the innovative MMQL technique, the nano-ferrofluid concentration of 6% and magnetic field intensity of 93 G resulted in lower surface roughness of the workpiece relative to other counterparts.

Originality/value

Examining previously published studies showed that using nano-ferrofluids under a magnetic field for cooling purposes in machining processes have less considered by researchers. This study applies an innovative method of lubrication under the concurrent effect of magnetic and electric fields, called EMMQL, to improve the efficiency of MQL in machining hard-to-cut materials. For comprehensively inspecting the newly presented method, the effects of several parameters, including the nano-ferrofluid concentration, magnetic field intensity, lubricant flow rate and position of lubricant spray nozzle, on the surface roughness of workpiece in turning of AISI 304 stainless steel are investigated.

Abstract

The periodically fully developed laminar heat transfer and fluid flow of an array of non‐uniform plate length, aligned at angles to air flow direction, have been investigated by numerical analysis in the Reynolds number range from 15 to 410. To implement the periodic boundary condition in both streamwise and spanwise directions and to confine the computation exactly within one cycle, proposes a linear interpolation technique, which has been proved successful by comparing the results with those obtained in an extended domain. It has been found that with an increase in the ratio of the long plate length to that of the short plate and with a decrease in the ratio of the transverse pitch to the streamwise cycle length, both the Nusselt number and friction factor decrease. Comparison of the numerical results of Nusselt number and friction factor with relevant experimental results have been performed. The agreement should be judged reasonably good.

Abstract

Purpose

Land value in urban areas in India is influenced by regulations, bylaws and the amenities associated with them. Planning interventions play a significant role in enhancing the quality of the neighbourhood, thereby resulting in a change in its value. Land is a distinct commodity due to its fixed location, and planning interventions are also specific to certain locations. Consequently, the factors influencing land value will vary across different areas. While recent literature has explored some determinants of land value individually, conducting a comprehensive study specific to each location would be more beneficial for making informed policy decisions. Therefore, this article aims to examine and identify the critical factors that impact the value of residential land in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, India.

Design/methodology/approach

The study employed a combination of semi-structured and structured interview methods to construct a Relative Importance Index (RII) and ascertain the critical determinants affecting residential land value. A sample of 36 experts, comprising property valuers, urban planners and real estate professionals operating within the National Capital Territory of Delhi, India, were selected using snowball sampling techniques. Subsequently, rank correlation and ANOVA methods were employed to evaluate the obtained results.

Findings

Location and stage of urban development are the most critical determinants in determining residential land values in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, India. The study identifies a total of 13 critical determinants.

Practical implications

A scenario planning approach can be developed to achieve an equitable distribution of values and land use entropy. A land value assessment model can also be developed to assist professional valuers.

Originality/value

There has been a lack of emphasis on assessing the impact of planning interventions and territorial regulation on land values in the context of Delhi. This study will contribute to policy decision-making by developing a rank list of planning-based determinants of land value.

Abstract

Purpose

The adsorption and acceleration behavior of 3-mercaptopropyl sulfonate (MPS) were investigated by electrochemical tests for microvia filling by copper electroplating.

Design/methodology/approach

The synergistic effects of one suppressor of propylene oxide ethylene oxide propylene oxide named PEP and MPS as the accelerator during copper electroplating were also investigated by electrochemical methods such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy cyclic voltammetric stripping (CVS) and Galvanostatic measurements (GMs).

Findings

The research results suggest that the adsorption of MPS onto the Cu-RDE metal surface was a spontaneous process and the adsorbing of MPS on cathode was proposed to physical-chemistry adsorption in the plating formula. There was no potential difference (i.e. ?? = 0) of GMs until MPS was injected into the plating solution suggest that copper deposition is not diffusion-controlled in the presence of PEP–Cl–JGB.

Originality/value

A new composition of plating bath was found to be effective to perform bottom-up copper filling of microvias in the fabrication of PCB in electronic industries. The adsorption of MPS into the Cu-RDE metal surface was a spontaneous process and the adsorbing of MPS on cathode was studied by EIS and the results proposed to physical-chemistry adsorption in the plating formula. An optimal plating solution composed of CuSO4, H2SO4, chloride ions, PEP, MPS and JGB was obtained, and the microvia could be fully filled using the plating formula.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to describe how public‐sector organizations in the Chinese autonomous region of Guangxi Zhuang are applying e‐HRM practices.

Design

Concentrates on the operation of e‐recruitment, e‐training, e‐compensation, e‐benefits and e‐appraisal.

Findings

Reports that blended conventional and electronic HRM practices exist and are likely to continue for a little while into the future.

Practical implications

Reveals that, where e‐HRM is being used, its prime benefit is in reducing the amount of repetitive paperwork that HR specialists have to carry out.

Social implications

Explains that there is still a tendency for people to work too hard in the Chinese civil service, partly because it is seen as the decent thing to do and partly for employees to earn a lot of money. But there are signs, too, that increasing numbers of employees are seeking a decent work‐life balance.

Originality/value

Reveals how e‐HRM operates in the context of the Chinese public sector.

Abstract

Purpose

To provide some heat transfer and friction factor results for fin‐and‐tube heat transfer surfaces which may be used in air conditioning industry.

Design/methodology/approach

Numerical simulation approach was adopted to compare the plain plate fin and three types of radial slotted fin surfaces.

Findings

It is found that at the same frontal velocity (1.0‐3 m/s) the plain plate fin has the lowest heat transfer rate with the smallest pressure drop. The full slotted fin surface has the highest heat transfer rate with the largest pressure drop penalty. The partially slotted fin (where the strips are mainly located in the rear part of the fin) and the back slotted fin are some what in between. Under the identical pumping power constraint, the partially slotted fin surface behaves the best.

Research limitations/implications

The results are only valid the two‐row fin surface.

Practical implications

The results are very useful for the design of two‐row tube fin surfaces with high efficiency.

Originality/value

This paper provides original information of slotted fin surface with radial strips from the field synergy principle.

Abstract

Purpose

Digital inclusive finance has a positive promotion effect on the development of the national economy, but little research exists on how digital inclusive finance affects high-quality consumption in economically developed regions. Therefore, to fill the gap, this paper aims to study the impact of digital inclusive finance on high-quality consumption development using the economically developed regions of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai as examples.

Design/methodology/approach

Firstly, the entropy method is used to construct the index of high-quality consumption among residents. Then, the municipal-level data of Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai from 2011 to 2020 are used to test the impact. Subsequently, the mechanism of action test and heterogeneity analysis are conducted.

Findings

The results show that digital inclusive finance has a positive role in promoting the high-quality consumption of residents in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai. At the same time, digital inclusive finance can promote high-quality consumption through its own digital payment and internet insurance channels. There is regional heterogeneity in the impact.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first to examine whether and how digital inclusive finance affects high-quality consumption. The authors consider multiple dimensions, such as consumption level, consumption structure, consumption ability, consumption environment and consumption mode, to measure high-quality consumption. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, investors and regulators in planning regulations.

Case overview

Luodian Electric Power Construction Corporation Group (LEPCC Group) is a state owned enterprise transformed from a construction unit of Luopu Power Supply Bureau (LPSB), a governmental organization in charge of all the electricity supply in Luopu City. The general manager of LEPCC, Gu Ming tried to set up a modern market-oriented management system for LEPCC. Unfortunately the problems that had accumulated in the past two decades during which LEPCC was a governmental organization made his reforms very difficult. The first headache for Gu Ming was the performance appraisal reform in LEPCC. The existing performance appraisal system seemed to have at least three problems in practice: unclear appraisal objectives, an improper assessment system, a different appraisal standard for similar positions. What should Gu Ming do to build a proper performance appraisal system to help the fast-growing LEPCC Group to make LEPCC a competitive market-oriented player?

Expected learning outcomes

The first objective of this case is to enable students to understand that the issues of working performance are issues of people first, rather than issues of the management system. If the management focuses on the system instead of on the staff of the company to design the performance management system, the system will be fruitless and inefficient. The second objective is to cultivate students' capability to apply the basic theories of human resource management and the knowledge of performance appraisal in case analysis and practical management. This case, seemingly about performance appraisal, is in fact about the organizational structure and processes of the organization. Reform should start with organizational analysis, job analysis and job descriptions. Only when all these have been done correctly, can the performance management system be designed more reasonably, scientifically and efficiently.
