Contemporary interpretations of mental health recovery emphasize the need to understand better the lived experience of people with mental health conditions and how they define the idea of recovery. While traction for such ideas has been building in many western countries, the recovery movement is still in its early stages within most Asian countries. Hence, this study aims to add to this growing effort by understanding various factors that influence the recovery of people with mental health conditions in Singapore.

Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis was used on the qualitative data provided by 21 participants.

Four themes were revealed: double-edged nature of social support, challenges accessing mental health support, personalized coping strategies and societal influences. As a result, the authors could better understand various factors that influenced the recovery process of people with mental health conditions in Singapore, such as the high costs and low levels of literacy regarding pathways to mental health services. In addition, the importance of societal influences on mental health recovery was highlighted, and their impact could be seen through the participants’ sharing.

These findings form a foundation from which future research and recovery-oriented interventions can work from to provide more tailored approaches to supporting people with mental health conditions.

This study identified cultural nuances to notions of recovery that are commonly found in personal recovery constructs that need to be considered when working within culturally diverse populations.

This article is concerned with how sentences may be represented briefly but informatively in graphic displays of a sentence dependency structure. Different automatic abbreviation schemes were assessed on a sample data set for compression and ambiguity. ‘Speedwriting’ of words longer than five letters yielded a compression to 80% of the source text, with very low ambiguity. This and two other automatic notemaking‐like techniques have been implemented as options in the texnet text structure management system.

Widespread support exists for the view that teaching is a complex task (Schulman, 2004), that learning is a complex, dynamic phenomenon and that classrooms are ‘complex systems’ (Hardman, 2010). Systems behaving in complex, emergent ways cannot be successfully ‘managed’ by rigid, scripted practices but demand flexibility, responsiveness and in situ judgement. However, these dispositions appear only fleetingly, if at all, on professional standards rubrics and statutory descriptors of effective teaching. Discretionary judgement is implied but rarely emphasised. Drawing on the first author's doctoral study of ‘emergent learning’ in a primary school classroom, we demonstrate the importance of pre- and in-service teachers developing expert in-the-moment professional judgement to navigate the emergent and complex nature of classroom learning and argue that professional judgement should enjoy a more prominent, less tacit, position in pre-service initial teacher education (ITE) and in-service Continuing Professional Development (CPD). This chapter briefly describes and presents findings from the doctoral research which focused on how learning emerges bottom-up through classroom interactions, discusses the implications of this for teachers and concludes by setting an agenda for future research into teachers' experiences of agency and autonomy.

This paper applies the variable forgetting factor and the fixed forgetting factor to financial time-series analysis, and establishes the linkage for the first time between the variable forgetting factor approach and kernel smoothing. We then demonstrate the use of the proposed variable forgetting factor approach to undertake forecasting of the Euro's exchange rates and the CRSP monthly net asset values (NAV). For both applications, the findings show that the kernel bandwidth so determined can improve the forecasting performance.

The growth of international business persists, particularly in emerging economies. Business in these developing nations is heavily influenced by national culture. In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, buyer-supplier relationships are often negatively influenced by “wasta” – a term associated with power, influence, connection and corruption. Technology-enhanced business processes diffuse as globalization increases. The purpose of this research was to explore whether and, if so, how electronic reverse auction (e-RA) use might be effective in a MENA national culture.

The authors use a case study method based on data collected from 13 interviews with supply chain members extending beyond the dyad to explain: why Middle Eastern bidders participated in an e-RA; the nature of a unique phenomenon in Middle Eastern culture called wasta; and (3) how wasta, e-RA use, and procurement integrity interact in a sustainable way.

This case study extends knowledge in the area of global supply chain management by identifying new opportunities and providing a mechanism to ameliorate risks. It demonstrated that e-RAs can ameliorate some of the deleterious effects of wasta by increasing transparency and procedural fairness associated with MENA-based buyer-supplier relationships.

E-RAs have been criticized as being unfair to suppliers. This study unveils cultural idiosyncrasies where e-RAs overcome a moral hazard associated with MENA buyer-supplier relationships and become a supplier's favored sourcing medium. As economic growth in MENA is expected to outpace all other regions, this study has implications for understanding how regionally specific cultural variables impact B2B sourcing strategy adoption and outcomes.

Throughout the ages, caring for an individual with a significant physical disability and/or health impairment has been extremely difficult or perhaps even impossible. Conditions for survival were often hard, requiring all able-bodied family members working from dawn until dark to scratch out even a minimal standard of living. Consequently, little time and resources were available for the care of a loved one with a disability. Safford and Safford's sobering volume (1996) emphasizes that children have always been vulnerable to neglect and children with disabilities were particularly subject to abuse. To illustrate this, children with disabilities were particularly subject to infanticide, abandonment, slavery, sterilization or placed in orphanages, where maiming sometimes occurred to increase the individuals' potential for street corner begging.
