Abstract

Purpose

The successful and commercial use of self-driving/driverless/unmanned/automated car will make human life easier. The paper aims to discuss this issue.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper reviews the key technology of a self-driving car. In this paper, the four key technologies in self-driving car, namely, car navigation system, path planning, environment perception and car control, are addressed and surveyed. The main research institutions and groups in different countries are summarized. Finally, the debates of self-driving car are discussed and the development trend of self-driving car is predicted.

Findings

This paper analyzes the key technology of self-driving car and illuminates the state-of-art of the self-driving car.

Originality/value

The main research contents and key technology have been introduced. The research progress as well as the research institution has been summarized.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to overcome the limitations of sensory substitution methods (SSDs) to represent high-level or conceptual information involved in vision, which are mainly produced by the biological sensory mismatch between sight and substituting senses. Thus, provide the visually impaired with a more practical and functional SSD.

Design/methodology/approach

Unlike any other approach, the SSD extends beyond a sensing prototype, by integrating computer vision methods to produce reliable knowledge about the physical world (at the lowest cost to the user). Importantly though, the authors do not abandon the typical encoding of low-level features into sound. The paper simply argues that any visual perception can be achieved through hearing needs to be reinforced or enhanced by techniques that lie beyond mere visual-to-audio mapping (e.g. computer vision, image processing).

Findings

Experiments reported in this paper reveal that the See ColOr is learnable and functional, and provides easy interaction. In moderate time, participants were enabled to grasp visual information of the world out of which they could derive: spatial awareness, ability to find someone, location of daily objects and skill to walk safely avoiding obstacles. The encouraging results open a door toward autonomous mobility of the blind.

Originality/value

The paper uses the “extended” approach to introduce and justify that the system is brand new, as well as the experimental studies on computer-vision extension of SSDs that are presented. Also, this is the first paper reporting on a terminated, integrated and functional system.

Abstract

Purpose

According to the problems of visual perception, we propose a model for the processing of vision in adverse situations of illumination, scale, etc. In this paper, a model for image segmentation and labelling obtained in real conditions with different scales is proposed.

Design/methodology/approach

The model is based on the texture identification of the scene's objects by means of comparison with a database that stores series of each texture perceived with successive optic parameter values. As a basis for the model, self‐organising maps have been used in several phases of the labelling process.

Findings

The model has been conceived to systematically deal with the different causes that make vision difficult and allows it to be applied in a wide range of real situations. The results show high success rates in the labelling of scenes captured in different scale conditions, using very simple describers, such as different histograms of textures.

Research limitations/implications

Our interest is directed towards systematising the proposal and experimenting on the influence of the other variables of the vision. We will also tackle the implantation of the classifier module so that the different causes can be dealt with by the reconfiguration of the same hardware (using reconfigurable hardware).

Originality/value

This research approaches a very advanced angle of the vision problems: visual perception under adverse conditions. In order to deal with this problem, a model formulated with a general purpose is proposed. Our objective is to present an approach to conceive universal architectures (in the sense of being valid with independence of the implied magnitudes).

Abstract

Purpose

Metaverse is a virtual application spawned by digital technology that is becoming increasingly relevant to our lives. However, for the opportunities created and challenges posed by the metaverse, its important elements and future evolution trend remain largely unknown. Thus, this paper aims to understand the current status of metaverse research and its future research directions.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on the analysis of the literature data on the metaverse both in English and Chinese using Latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA) topic modeling and bibliometrics, this study discussed the related research and development trend of the metaverse. The authors first defined the concept of the metaverse and analyzed 1,378 English articles from seven publishers and 590 Chinese articles from the CNKI database. Following that, the authors summarized three important themes from the current studies: virtual world, metaverse technologies and metaverse applications. Finally, a framework of future directions on metaverse research was proposed.

Findings

The review found that during the rapid development of the metaverse, opportunities and challenges coexisted. In the virtual world, metaverse technologies drive the implementation of application scenarios, and in turn, applications promote the improvement of technologies. The interrelationship between technology and application lays the foundation for the development of the metaverse. Future metaverse research will generate different research directions.

Originality/value

This review provides a valuable, systematic perspective for individuals who want to understand the metaverse. The conceptual framework on metaverse research proposed in this paper offers a comparison of literature analysis from domestic and international perspectives and brings new insights into the development of the metaverse.

Purpose

The recognition and positioning of start welding position (SWP) is the first step and one of the key technologies to realize autonomous robot welding. The purpose of this paper is to describe a method developed to accomplish successful autonomous detection and guiding of SWP.

Design/methodology/approach

The images of workpieces are snapped by charge coupled device (CCD) cameras in a relative large range without additional light. The recognized methods of SWP are analyzed according to the given definition. A two‐step method named “coarse‐to‐fine” is proposed to recognize the SWP accurately. The first step is to solve the curve functions of seam and workpieces boundaries by fitting. The intersection point is regarded as initial value of SWP. The second step is to establish a small window that takes the initial value of SWP as centre. Then, the SWP is obtained exactly by corner detection in the window. Both the abundant information of original image and the structured information of recognized image are used according to given rules, which takes full advantage of the image information and improves the recognized precision.

Findings

The detected results show that the actual and calculated positions by first step of SWP are identical for regular seam, but different for the irregular curve seam. The exact results can be calculated by the two‐step method in the paper for both regular and irregular seams. The typical planar “S‐shape” and spatial arc curved seams are selected to carry out autonomous guiding of SWP.

Originality/value

The experimental results are given based on the introduction of 3D reconstructed and guided method. The guided precision is less than 1.1 mm, which meets the requirements of practical production. The proposed two‐step method recognizes the SWP rapidly and exactly from coarse to fine.

Abstract

Purpose

Industry 4.0 technologies have the potential to improve the quality management performance of industrial companies. The paper analyses the influence of Industry 4.0 technologies on quality management aspects, but also the barriers that slow down the deployment of each Industry 4.0 technology and limit each impact.

Design/methodology/approach

The impact of Industry 4.0 technologies on quality management aspects (QMAs) is a heterogeneous and multidimensional phenomenon dependent on the current context, a holistic multiple case study has been applied. Twenty-six case studies were carried out on eight Industry 4.0 technologies, with a minimum of two cases per technology. These cases were selected from the 168 projects presented in the four editions of the BIND 4.0 program, winner of the 14th edition of the European Enterprise Promotion Awards. The cases were selected based on a preliminary survey of 124 project managers. Subsequently, individual case and cross-case analyses for each technology were carried out. Finally, these results were confirmed by interviews with a minimum of two customers per Industry 4.0.

Findings

Results show that the adoption of Industry 4.0 technologies positively affects QMAs. Specifically, the influences received by “process control” and “customer satisfaction” from all the Industry 4.0 technologies studied are medium to high. In addition, barriers from the “economic and legal” and “workers” categories exert greater influence than the barriers pertaining to “organization”, “lack of training and information” and “technology”.

Research limitations/implications

The main limitation is the generalizability of the findings of qualitative studies (ergo the case study). In this sense, statistical generalizability, characteristic of a random sample, is not intended in this paper. Therefore, the use of multiple case studies has been chosen to reinforce analytical generalizations with corroborated evidence (literal replication).

Practical implications

Managers interested in adopting Industry 4.0 technologies Ts should plan the implementation process to minimize the impact of these barriers and optimize the results for each stakeholder. In this sense, the barriers that concern the workers should be managed. It is the responsibility of managers to inform and explain how data will be handled, and how privacy concerns will be addressed.

Social implications

It is essential to explain and convince workers about the need for a renewal of tasks. New types of jobs (i.e. the use of robots) will involve training for workers to enable their integration alongside the new technologies.

Originality/value

This paper addresses two under-researched areas that are essential when defining strategies in the industrial business context. Firstly, the paper analyses the influence of each I40 T on each QMA. Secondly, it analyses the barriers to adopt that slow down the rollout of each I40 T and limits each impact.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to integrate perception, action and symbolic knowledge to allow an autonomous robot to operate in unstructured environments and to interact with non‐expert users.

Design/methodology/approach

To achieve such goals, a cognitive robot architecture is proposed based on the integration between subsymbolic and linguistic computations through the introduction of an intermediate level of representation based on conceptual spaces.

Findings

The architecture has been tested in the CiceRobot project on tasks related to guided tours in the Archaeological Museum of Agrigento. Experimental results show that robot cognitive behaviors allow one to achieve a full functional robotic museum guide. In particular, through the interaction with visitors the robot is able to customize the tour depending on their preferences.

Originality/value

The paper presents a significant case study because it involves perception, planning and human‐robot interaction. The proposed architecture addresses the capacities which are generally addressed by an intelligent agent: the capability of representing itself and the external world, of imagining possible evolutions of the world, of paying attention to the relevant events, of planning and evaluating situations and actions.
