Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to explore the attitudes of nursing home administrators and key managerial staff toward health information technology (health IT).

Design/methodology/approach

This research is exploratory in nature, and applies qualitative case-study methodology to further understand health IT adoption by nursing homes through multiple in-depth semi-structured interviews of management, and direct observations of employee behavior at each participating facility. A modified Technology Acceptance Model is used to examine the attitudes and perceptions of administrators.

Findings

This study finds that there are differences in the level of health IT adoption by nursing homes. While some administrators are aware of health IT and are implementing or updating their IT systems in a gradual but haphazard manner, others exhibited a lack of interest in implementing change. Overall, there is a lack of systematic planning and decision-making toward health IT adoption. Adoption is not evidence-based, instead driven primarily by real and perceived regulatory requirements combined with a lack of information about, or consideration of, the real costs and benefits of implementing health IT.

Research limitations/implications

Including six in-depth case studies, the sample for this study is small for generalizing the findings. Yet, it contributes to the literature on the slow process of health IT adoption by nursing homes. Moreover, the findings provide guidelines for future research.

Practical implications

This study demonstrates that nursing home administrators must systematically plan the adoption of health IT, and such decision making should be evidenced-based and participatory so that employees can voice their opinions that could prevent future resistance.

Originality/value

This study is original and advances knowledge on the reasons for the slow adoption of health IT in nursing homes. It finds that lack of adequate information regarding the utility and benefits of health IT in management adoption decisions can result in haphazard implementation or no adoption at all. This finding has significant value for policy makers’ practitioners for improving accessibility of information regarding the use of health IT in nursing homes that could address the health IT adoption challenge in this industry.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this study was the development and validation (D&V) of an assessment tool to measure administrators' attitudes towards the ‘Apprenticeship Embedded Degree Program (AEDP)’ in higher education institutions (HEIs).

Design/methodology/approach

A rigorous empirical method was followed encompassing four D&V phases: literature review, theoretical or face validation, validation with possible respondents or semantic validation and statistical validation. A pilot study was conducted among 150 randomly selected administrators from 50 different HEIs in India. The collected data were analyzed for statistical validation using exploratory factor analysis followed by confirmatory factor analysis.

Findings

The final version of the 21-item three-dimensional scale was found effective having significant degrees of reliability and validity. Exploratory factor analysis endorsed the factor extractions and data adequacy. The average variance extracted (AVE) for the three constructs (0.59, 0.70 and 0.66, respectively) were higher than the threshold value of 0.5, authorizing the convergent validity. The Cronbach alpha values (0.79, 0.81 and 0.77) were higher than the threshold value of 0.70, endorsing factors as reliable. Confirmatory factor analysis ascertained the multi-dimensionality of the scale and model fit having passable convergent validity. Discriminant validity (DV) was determined using the Fornell-Larcker criterion.

Research limitations/implications

The newly developed “AdministratorsAttitude towards AEDP Scale” will serve as a valid psychometric tool for future research accosting AEDP implementation. It could be administered as an electronic tool as well, subject to potential adjustments reducing the identified ceiling effects and floor effects.

Originality/value

The scale is a unique addition to the allied literature based on an original empirical survey finding conducted in India.

The universities have traditionally seen as one of their major functions the preparation of persons for the higher professions. Though the definition of high profession has been expanded in recent decades to include a wide spectrum of occupations ranging all the way from forestry to accountancy and including various kinds of administration, whether it be business or hospital or school, the universities hate been very slow in recognising university administration as an area requiring their attention. Universities provide preparation for many professions including those relating to administration, but they have been slow to develop courses to meet the requirements of their own complex administrative systems. The reason for this lies in an outmoded perspective of the modern university. In Australia, programmes of training are now being introduced. Some of these are examined and described.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to apply the theory of planned behavior, the theory of stakeholders, the theory of technology acceptance to evaluate the factors that affect the application of integrated reporting in Vietnamese listed companies.

Design/methodology/approach

Quantitative research method was used through survey questionnaire. Research data is collected from 144 directors, accountants, administrators of companies listed on Vietnam stock market in the period 2020–2022. Multivariable regression analysis is performed with three independent variables: usefulness, ease of use and environmental influence. Dependent variable is intended to apply integrated report.

Findings

Research results show that all independent variables have a positive impact on the dependent variable. In particular, the environment influence variable has the largest impact (0.443), followed by the level of impact of Usefulness” variable and “Ease of use” variable are 0.243 and 0.241, respectively. The regression model manages to explain 52.8% of the impact of the factors on the application of integrated reports. An analysis of the differences between groups of enterprises by staff size and capital size is carried out, the results hereof show that large enterprises tend to apply more integrated reporting. From the research results, the authors propose recommendations to promote the application of integrated reporting in Vietnamese enterprises to gradually improve the quality of information disclosure, attract investment and accelerate international economic integration.

Originality/value

The study evaluates the current situation of integrated reporting of Vietnamese companies to understand the factors affecting the use of integrated reporting, from which to propose recommendations to promote the application of integrated reporting in Vietnamese enterprises to gradually improve the quality of information disclosure, attract investment and accelerate international economic integration.

Abstract

This study examines attitudes of students, teachers, and administrators about HIV education in Ugandan secondary schools. Results indicated significant differences between these groups regarding perspectives about sexuality, transmission of HIV, and AIDS stigma. Behavioral assessment indicated low prevalence of high-risk activities among students, which implies a need for continued education and behavioral reinforcement in the curriculum in the intervention programs for behavioral maintenance. This study provides important insights as to how a comprehensive HIV education program can be more effectively and efficiently integrated in the school system. An ongoing discussion within the public and private sector of the country addresses the need for a comprehensive education curriculum, which includes teacher training, peer education, and strong involvement of governmental and nongovernmental organizations. Results from this study provide an important step in this process.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the adoption and use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) by school administrators in the management of schools, as well as factors that influence use of ICTs by the administrators.

Design/methodology/approach

Survey research design was adopted. A two-stage sampling procedure (random and purposive) was used to select the respondents, while quantitative and qualitative methods were used for data collection.

Findings

Findings reveal that the school administrators use various ICTs to carry out administrative and management duties. Task characteristics, task-technology fit, attitude and perceived ease of use have significant relationships with use of ICTs by the administrators.

Research limitations/implications

The findings and conclusion from this paper cannot be generalised to all schools in Nigeria because the population was limited to only private secondary schools.

Practical implications

The study contributes to an existing knowledge on adoption and use of ICTs in schools, and provides information to policymakers on factors that should be given consideration when there is a need to implement ICTs in schools.

Social implications

This paper could assist school administrators that are yet to adopt and implement ICTs in their schools of the need to do so in order to enjoy the benefits associated with ICTs use in the workplace.

Originality/value

This paper is one of the first pieces of empirical research that has adopted the integrated technology acceptance and task-technology fit models to investigate use of ICTs by administrators of schools in Nigeria.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study was to identify how current K-12 district and school leaders who are alumni of an educational administration program describe how they acquired the essential skills and experiences needed to be effective in the leadership positions.

Design/methodology/approach

For this qualitative study, the authors interviewed program alumni of one university leadership preparation program regarding the experiences and training they identified as having prepared them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and attitudes to be successful in their positions, as well as which components of their administrative internship experiences, if any, they identified as having most prepared them for their positions.

Findings

School and district administrators indicated they acquired the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to become successful leaders through specific preparation experiences and opportunities. Key experiences cited by alumni included gaining some leadership responsibilities while they were teachers and further opportunities to lead in the administrative internship; engaging in practical, hands-on assignments in their graduate degree program courses; learning from other administrators with unique areas of work responsibilities, as well as from other schools and districts; and receiving guidance from a dedicated mentor.

Originality/value

The findings from this study contribute to research in the area of administrator preparation by guiding preparation programs in prioritizing the types of training and practicum experiences that aspiring K-12 educational leaders receive as a component of their preparation programs.

Abstract

Purpose

An appreciative inquiry (AI) collaborative study with 11 school administrators in a highly diverse suburban school district sought to understand if observing and sharing successful school practices/events in a whole group setting led to change in their perceptions, attitudes, and administrative practice. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

The study took place over a ten-week period with a group of self-selected (voluntary participation) school administrative participants.

Findings

There were two findings: the AI focus of inquiry on successful practices/events shapes school administrator perceptions, attitudes, and application of craft knowledge to practice; and the school administrators’ sharing of successful practices/events in a whole group setting generated new forms of practice during the ten-week study.

Originality/value

The findings suggest that reflection and integration of successful practices/events are a source of craft knowledge advancing changes in school administrative practice.
