Abstract

Purpose

According to regulations, aircraft must be in an airworthy condition before they can be operated. To ensure airworthiness, they must be maintained by an approved component maintenance organisation. This study is aimed to identify potential errors that may arise during the final inspection and certification process of aircraft components, categorise them, determine their consequences and quantify the associated risks. Any removed aircraft components must be sent to an approved aircraft component maintenance organisation for further maintenance and issuance of European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) Form 1. Thereafter, a final inspection and certification process must be conducted by certifying staff to receive an EASA Form 1. This process is crucial because any errors during this stage can result in the installation of unsafe components in an aircraft.

Design/methodology/approach

The Systematic Human Error Reduction and Prediction Approach (SHERPA) method was used to identify potential errors. This method involved a review of the procedures of three maintenance organisations, individual interviews with ten subject matter experts and a consensus group of 14 certifying staff from different maintenance organisations to achieve the desired results.

Findings

In this study, 39 potential errors were identified during the final inspection and certification process. Furthermore, analysis revealed that 48.7% of these issues were attributed to checking errors, making it the most common type of error observed.

Originality/value

This study pinpoints the potential errors in the final inspection and certification of aircraft components. It offers maintenance organisations a roadmap to assess procedures, implement preventive measures and reduce the likelihood of these errors.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to understand the dimensions of mall attractiveness for Indian shoppers from the metro cities of New Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai and Mumbai; and subsequently investigate the effect of these dimensions on shoppers’ mall experience.

Design/methodology/approach

A shopper intercept survey was conducted in the aforementioned cities and 400 responses were obtained which were analysed with exploratory factor analysis and stepwise regression.

Findings

The results indicate that tenant management, facilities management, atmospherics and entertainment potential are the factors which attract shoppers to malls. Tenant management, facilities management and atmospherics also emerge as significant predictors of mall shopping experience.

Research limitations/implications

Due to limited resources, the research results may lack generalizability. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to test the derived factors and hypothesized relationships further.

Practical implications

Contemporary retail settings have transited to offer holistic experiences, generated out of tenant mix, facilities and atmospherics. Managers of shopping malls can enhance their mall attractiveness by identifying an optimal mix of factors such as crowd management, tenant variety, parking, etc. as seen in the results of this study. Entertainment emerges as a mall attractiveness dimension but not as a significant predictor of shopping experience which shows that Indian shoppers’ inclination towards hedonism is still in elementary stages and economic pursuit continues to be a dominant motivator for visiting a mall.

Originality/value

This paper attempts to provide a holistic overview of mall attractiveness dimensions in India and its implications for shopping experiences.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to identify important criteria for sustainable recovery of digital entrepreneurship from distress situation using shared resources. During pandemic disruption, the importance of sharing economy in managing business efficiency is reflected through this research.

Design/methodology/approach

The present study advances the knowledge on shared resources in business by integrating case study approach with multi criteria decision-making (MCDM) model. A fuzzy analytic hierarchy process approach is adopted to compute criteria weights, and a fuzzy technique for order performance by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) technique is used to rank the sharing economy entrepreneurial ventures during COVID-19 pandemic in the context of emerging economy.

Findings

The present study identified five most important enablers (technological innovation, technology expertise, convergence of virtual and physical spaces, collaboration rather than competition, and benefits to underserved groups through transparency) for sustainable recovery of sharing economy ventures in emerging economy. For example, the study highlights online tutoring through shared intellect as the most sought after sharing economy venture during pandemic disruption, which fulfills the identified enablers.

Practical implications

The proposed framework provides an accurate decision support tool to rank the various identified potential enablers of sharing economy during disruptions. Further, the approach is practically relevant to sharing economy entrepreneurs in selecting the best approach to recover sustainability during pandemic.

Originality/value

The study is unique in addressing the need of sustainability for digital ventures via sharing economy approach in emerging economy (India). To develop a conceptual framework, the present study incorporates a case based approach together with the hybrid MCDM model. Further, the extant literature on disruptions is enhanced by prioritizing the enablers for sharing economy during pandemic.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to develop chicken powder (CP) incorporated fried chicken vermicelli and to evaluate the collective effect of rosemary and betel leaf extracts (RE+BE) in developed products, on the performance of storage study parameters.

Design/methodology/approach

Two different groups were made from developed products: the first control group without RE+BE incorporated and the second group treated with RE+BE (1:1). Various chemical, microbiological and sensory parameters of both groups were evaluated at intervals of 15 days up to 60 days of storage.

Findings

RE+BE incorporation had significantly improved (p < 0.01) the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs), free fatty acid (FFA) and tyrosine value as compared to control. TBARs value of RE+BE treated product remained lower (0.23 ± 0.08 to 0.65 ± 0.07) than the control (0.25 ± 0.06 to 0.83 ± 0.05). Similarly, RE+BE treated product had significantly (p < 0.04) lower total plate count (TPC), Staphylococcus count (SC) and significantly (p < 0.01) lower yeast and mold count than control. Likewise RE+BE incorporation significantly (p < 0.01) improves sensory score (texture, flavor and overall acceptability except for appearance) of the product. RE+BE treated sample at the 60th day had a higher overall acceptability score (6.3 ± 0.8) than the score of control at the 45th day (6.1 ± 0.9).

Research limitations/implications

A shelf-stable meat product can be made by chicken powder incorporation in the gram flour and a combination of rosemary and betel leaf extracts may be used to improve the shelf-life of meat products.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to present the exploratory research into the moderating influence of perceived risk on credit card usage and experience link and to know, among various types of risks, which risk is mostly perceived by credit card users. The study also investigates the dimensions of usage and service experience and their relative significance in credit card industry.

Design/methodology/approach

The data were collected from 220 credit cardholders working in the various business and service units operating in Gandhi Nagar area of Jammu city.

Findings

The study captures a clear and strong moderating effect of perceived risk on usage and service experience link. Time risk appeared to be the strongest moderator. Further, sense of security and confidence benefits emerged as the strongest predictors of usage and service experience, respectively.

Research limitations/implications

The study is based on single financial service only, i.e. credit card. To generalise the results in financial and allied sectors, such as banking, retail or travel, where credit card usage is highly prevalent, this study need to be extended in future research. Further, influence of customer income, occupation and education on credit card use can also be seen in the future. Finally, focus can also be given to the identification and testing of risk-reducing strategies in future research.

Originality/value

There is no previous research on Indian credit card industry which examined the influence of perceived risk on its use among Indian customers and subsequently on their experience.

Abstract

Purpose

A digital supply chain (DSC) positively enhances circular economy (CE) practices. However, what factors and conditions lead to the implementation of DSC for transitioning toward CE is not yet clear. Therefore, this study aims at identifying and subsequently analyzing the antecedents of DSC for CE.

Design/methodology/approach

The study identifies major antecedents of DSC for CE to achieve sustainability objectives through literature review and expert opinions. In this study, 19 potential antecedents of DSCs for CE are established from the literature and suggestions from industry professionals. A trapezoidal fuzzy Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) approach is applied quantitatively to investigate the antecedents identified.

Findings

Conducted in the context of Indian automobile manufacturing industry, the findings of the study reflect that advanced information sharing arrangement, effective government policies for DSC and CE implementation and digitalizing the supply chains are the top three potential antecedents of DSC for a CE.

Originality/value

In the existing literature, few studies are specific to investigating the DSC and CE paradigm. The present study will help organizations develop a practical and integrated strategic approach that will foster DSC through improved knowledge of CE.

Abstract

Purpose

The International Journal of Organizational Analysis (IJOA) is a leading journal that has published high-quality research focused on various facets of organizational analysis since 1993. This paper aims to conduct a retrospective analysis of the IJOA journey from 2005 to 2020.

Design/methodology/approach

The data used in this study was extracted using the Scopus database. The bibliometric analysis, using several indicators, is adopted to reveal the major trends and themes of the journal. The mapping of bibliographic data is carried using VOSviewer and Biblioshiny.

Findings

The study findings indicate that IJOA has grown for publications and citations since its inception. Five significant research directions emerged, i.e. organizational diagnostics, organization citizenship behaviour, organizational commitment to employee retention, psychological capital and firm performance, based on cluster analysis of IJOA’s publications.

Originality/value

To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study to conduct a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of IJOA. The study presents the key themes and trends emerging from a leading journal, considered a high-quality journal, for researching various facets of organizational functioning by academicians, scholars and practitioners.

Learning outcomes

This case study attempts to sensitize the impact of restructuring on the organization’s employer brand. The students shall learn to appreciate the criticality of maintaining a balance between being an employee-centric organization and building a sustainable business model, to analyze the alternative people management strategies in emerging start-ups.

Case overview/synopsis

This case study illustrates the innovative human resource (HR) policies adopted by the start-up Meesho. Meesho was started as “Fashnear” by two Indian Institute of Technology graduates Sanjeev Barnwal and Vidit Aatrey in the year 2015, with the headquarters located in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. It was a social commerce platform wherein the local apparel sellers or manufacturers could register themselves on the app and sell their products online to nearby consumers and the product would be delivered to their homes. Later, it was renamed Meesho (Meri E-Shop) with an improved business model. The innovative people-centric policies got Meesho recognition as one of the most employee-friendly start-ups and an innovative employer. However, later as part of the restructuring exercise, it had to lay off employees, which had a counter impact on its reputation and image as a desirable employer. This case study captures the dilemma faced by start-ups like Meesho who were in the process of sustaining their growth and optimizing their workforce and, at the same time, have to manage their employer brand in the process.

Abstract

Purpose

Nowadays, ionic liquids (ILs) are used as lubricant additives because of their ability to improve tribological characteristics. However, majority of the ILs contains halogen-based anions. They are extremely sensitive to moisture and produce detrimental halides and halogen acids when reacted with moisture and water. These halides and halogen acids are harmful to the health and environment of the operator’s. This paper aims to study four different lubricants including two halogen-based ILs blended in canola oil and two phosphonium-based halogen-free ILs blended in canola oil and in pure canola oil.

Design/methodology/approach

Viscosity and contact angle were measured by using rheometer and contact angle goniometer, respectively. Machining experiments were performed using turning centre with four different lubricants at two different cutting speeds and temperatures, and the machining forces, tool morphology and roughness of the machined surface were analysed.

Findings

The results showed that the inclusion of 1% phosphonium-based halogen-free ILs blended in canola oil increased the viscosity by 44.8% and reduced the cutting and thrust force by 21.7% and 26.8%, respectively, compared to pure canola oil lubricant. Microscopic analysis of tool showed lower adhesive and abrasive wear when machined with phosphonium-based halogen-free ILs blended in canola oil. The workpiece surface roughness reduced by 32% for phosphonium-based halogen-free ILs blended in canola oil compared with pure canola oil.

Originality/value

Halogen-free ILs are possible green lubricants, as they do not contain harmful elements such as F, S, B and Cl like halogen-based ILs. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is presumably the first work which shows machining performance of halogen-free ILs as lubricant additives.
