Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to take the four resin as adsorbent and coal ash alkaline solution as the material and use the single factor experimental method to study absorption influence factors for each resin to absorb lithium. At the same time, the authors got the special properties of some kinds of resin and compared the test results of each resin at the optimum factors.

Design/methodology/approach

Because many factors affect the test, this study uses the method of comparison and control variables. This method study on the influencing factors of ion exchange resin adsorption Li+.

Findings

In these adsorption experiments, the basic resin adsorption effect is more obvious. The optimum adsorption conditions are as follows: resin quality is 0.1 g, the volume of fly ash solution is 100 ml, magnetic stirrer speed is 140 r/min and the adsorption time is 60 min. Under these conditions, the adsorption rate of Li+ could reach 25.17 per cent aluminum.

Originality/value

Li extracted from coal ash can not only relieve the lithium resources in short supply but can also provide a new mode to the field of coal resources in recycling economy and transition economy. At the same time, the extraction of Li resources will provide an important reserve of raw materials for the future of nuclear power plant.

Abstract

Purpose

The theoretical findings serve as a foundation for further research into understanding sulfide-based solid-state electrolytes, ultimately advancing the progress of all-solid-state batteries.

Design/methodology/approach

The electronic properties of Li7P3S11 are thoroughly explored through first-principles calculations.

Findings

This investigation encompasses the intricate atom-dominated valence and conduction bands, spatial charge density distribution and the breakdown of atom and orbital contributions to van Hove singularities. Additionally, the compound’s wide and discrete energy spectra reflect the substantial variations in bond lengths and its highly anisotropic geometric structure. The complex and nonuniform chemical environment indicates the presence of intricate hopping integrals.

Originality/value

This study provides valuable insights into the critical multiorbital hybridizations occurring in the Li-S and P-S chemical bonds. To validate the theoretical predictions, experimental techniques can be employed. By combining theoretical predictions with experimental data, a comprehensive understanding of the geometric and electronic characteristics of Li7P3S11 can be achieved.

Abstract

Purpose

When smelting Al-Li alloy, the material inevitably comes into contact with various oxide-refractories. These refractories are subjected to varying degrees of melt-corrosion at high temperatures. The purpose of this study is to find stable oxide refractories at casting temperature.

Design/methodology/approach

Four materials were selected for evaluation, and their corrosion by the Al-Li alloy at casting temperature and different holding times was measured. Subsequently, scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy were used to study the interfaces. Stable refractory materials were selected by comparing the thicknesses of the reaction layers.

Findings

The thickness of the Al-Li/ZrO2 reaction layer varies linearly with the square root of the holding duration. Therefore, the growth of the reaction layer is controlled by diffusion. The reaction layer of Al-Li/Al2O3 is thinner, and its growth is also controlled by diffusion. However, there were no obvious reaction layers between the Al-Li alloy and MgO or Y2O3. By comparing these reaction-layer thicknesses, the order of stability was found to be ZrO2 < Al2O3 < MgO and Y2O3.

Originality/value

These results provide a scientific basis for the optimal selection of refractory materials for Al-Li alloy smelting.

Abstract

Purpose

Exploring the Lean and Green relationship goes back to the beginnings of Lean manufacturing. Most cases established that companies implementing Lean have Green results. However, there are Lean practices with a higher impact on Green, but others with less impact. Therefore, this paper presents research that explores the relationship between Lean and Green in manufacturing companies and aims to determine whether Lean practices have a higher association with Green aspects.

Design/methodology/approach

A survey was conducted amongst manufacturing firms to determine their Lean Index (LI). The internally related elements of the Lean construct determined each firm’s LI, whilst Cronbach alpha determined internal LI consistency. The survey also identified firms developing six Green aspects: International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) 14001, ISO 50001, general Green aspects and the specific aspects of materials, energy and water. An individual sample t-test shows different LI levels of association for each Green aspect. Binomial logistic regression shows the LI element association for each Green aspect.

Findings

LI is higher at firms reporting the inclusion of Green aspects. More than half of LI components have a statistically relevant association with the six Green aspects. In general, Ishikawa diagrams had the highest association with Green aspects whilst the lowest was seen in workers as improvement initiators. By grouping the LI elements into their categories, the Lean practices related to controlling processes have a higher association, whilst the involvement of employees has the lowest.

Research limitations/implications

Further research found in this paper identifies the possibilities for investigating the specificities of each Lean tool to develop Green aspects in companies.

Practical implications

Practitioners learn that Lean and Green are not separate issues in business. This article provides evidence that Lean practices in place at companies are already associated with Green aspects, so integration may already be happening.

Originality/value

This paper provides specifics on the relationship between each Lean practice and developing Green aspects. Thus, this paper specifies the Lean practices that contribute most to Green efficiency to support the joint development of both themes.

Explores the issue of global licensing of technological advancement. Deals particularly with the legal side of things, minimizing risk in particular. Indicates that the fastest and best way of penetrating foreign markets is to use a local branch already established in the foreign market, or, alternatively, establish a subsidiary or joint venture. Focuses then on licensing and some of the problems that can arise from that – piracy, exploitation, competition and financial implications if things go wrong. Suggests ways to circumvent this through licensing agreements, patents, trademarks, copyright, technology transfer agreements, and/or national intellectual property laws. Defines a licensing agreement, covering the subject matter of the license, technical assistance provisions, specification of the scope of the license, royalty compensation, quality standards and warranties, infringement of licensed rights, and duration and termination of the agreement. Mentions, also, antitrust considerations and the tax aspects of licensing. Recommends this approach as it spells out terms and conditions clearly to all parties, thereby, hopefully, reducing misunderstanding and disputes.

Abstract

A religious revival is occurring in the United States today as the traditional wall preventing faith from entering the work place is crumbling. With workers increasingly practicing their religion at work, employers face a growing cavalcade of dilemmas, including those where employees discuss religious tenets, wear religious symbols, object to employer edits on the basis of faith, and proselytize. The faith/work challenge is made even more complex because of the greater number of religions practiced today (both traditional religions based on Judeo‐Christian principles and the so‐called “immigrant religions” that have blossomed during recent decades) coupled with the growing popularity of a host of “spirituality” movements. As the mixing of faith and work becomes common place, employers and employees naturally look to the law to establish concomitant rights and duties.
