Abstract

Purpose

Although customer co-creation has received a significant amount of attention in both practice and academics, most of the previous studies have been conducted from the customer perspective while how service employees are involved in the customer value co-creation process has been rarely examined. To fill in this gap, the purpose of this paper is to develop a scale of employee involvement in customer value co-creation, and test a theoretical model that investigates the antecedents and consequences of employee involvement in customer value co-creation.

Design/methodology/approach

Based on a comprehensive literature review and 12 in-depth interviews with service employees, a scale of employee involvement in customer value co-creation was developed in Study 1. The items were purified, and the construct validity and reliability were evaluated via a survey (n = 178). In Study 2, the newly developed scale was cross-validated in a new service context and a conceptual model was tested by estimating a structural equation model with survey data collected from service employees (n = 225).

Findings

The newly developed scale of employee involvement in customer value co-creation has demonstrated sufficient construct validity and reliability across different service contexts. Moreover, the results show that both customer orientation and perceived organizational support are positively associated with employee involvement in customer value co-creation, which, in turn, influences employees’ job satisfaction and job stress. In addition, firm cross-functional cooperation strengthens the relationships between perceived organizational support and employee involvement in customer value co-creation.

Research limitations/implications

Future research from other service contexts and countries is needed to confirm the generalizability of the new scale and the findings.

Practical implications

The findings of the study will provide implications to service managers regarding where to focus their organizational resources and how to facilitate employee involvement in customer value co-creation.

Originality/value

This study takes an initial step to develop a scale of employee involvement in customer value co-creation and test the antecedents and consequences of employee involvement in customer value co-creation.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to investigate the role of the service provider in determining customer satisfaction in sharing economy services. The authors sought to examine how the intrinsic and extrinsic cues along with their interactions influence customer satisfaction.

Design/methodology/approach

This research uses a mixed-methods design to test the hypotheses. Study 1 uses secondary data from Inside Airbnb. Study 2 uses a 2 × 2 × 2 between-subject experimental design.

Findings

Both studies support the confirmation bias perspective over the expectancy-confirmation perspective in explaining the interplay among different cues in determining customer satisfaction. In the context of Airbnb, in the absence of a Superhost badge, if hosts adopt a reactive communication style, physical presence has a greater impact on customer satisfaction compared to virtual presence.

Originality/value

This study extends the services marketing literature and cue utilization theory by investigating the dynamic interactions among multiple intrinsic and extrinsic service cues. It shed new light on how a combination of these cues may become additive or redundant in determining customer satisfaction. This study contributes to the services marketing literature by addressing the interactive nature of sharing economy services and the neglected role of service providers.

Abstract

Purpose

Young construction project management practitioners (CPMPs) have unique, complex, and notable occupational mental health problems. However, there were few studies about the intervention for occupational mental health of CPMPs, and traditional intervention modes often failed to achieve significant effects. Therefore, this study aims to propose a new and effective intervention method.

Design/methodology/approach

Job crafting intervention was used to design an intervention experiment. A total of 72 CPMPs participated in a 10-week randomized controlled trial in China. Descriptive statistics and repeated measures analysis of variance were used to verify the effectiveness of job crafting intervention (JCI) on job crafting behaviors, job burnout, and work engagement with consideration of the impact of time.

Findings

Results showed that the intervention increased social resources, thus effectively reducing job burnout and promoting work engagement. Time also had a significant impact on cynicism, dedication, and social resources.

Practical implications

The authors should promote the habit of job crafting in CPMPs. Furthermore, in order to facilitate their job crafting, the authors should increase structural and social resources for them, and the authors can also encourage them to undertake challenging demands to increase their self-efficacy and the sense of achievement.

Originality/value

The authors bring into light a new psychological intervention approach among CPMPs, which integrates the advantages of the guidance in traditional organized intervention methods and the proactivity in individual spontaneous job crafting. The authors verify the efficacy of the JCI among CPMPs and help propose countermeasures and suggestions to improve the occupational mental health of CPMPs.

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to study the seismic performance of the energy-saving block and invisible multi-ribbed frame composite walls (EBIMFCW), changing the shear-span ratio as the test parameter, the low-cycle reciprocating loading tests of six 1/2 scale wall models were carried out.

Design/methodology/approach

The test design method and analysis are used for the seismic performance of the EBIMFCW.

Findings

With the increase of shear-span ratio: the walls tend to occur bending failure even more, the initial stiffness of the wall decreases, the overall ductility of the wall is improved and the walls tend to occur bending failure.

Originality/value

The previous studies do not involve the seismic performance of EBIMFCW under different shear-span ratios. Therefore, the paper studies the hysteresis behavior, ductility, stiffness degradation and energy dissipation performance of EBIMFCW under different shear-span ratios.

Abstract

Purpose

As one of the world's most productive ecosystems, ecological land plays an important role in regional and global environments. Utilizing advanced optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data for land cover/land use research becomes increasingly popular. This research aims to investigate the complementarity of fully polarimetric SAR and optical imaging for ecological land classification in the eastern coastal area of China.

Design/methodology/approach

Four polarimetric decomposition methods, namely, H/Alpha, Yamaguchi3, VanZyl3 and Krogager, were applied to Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS) SAR image for scattering parameter extraction. These parameters were merged with ALOS optical parameters for subsequent classification using the object-based quick, unbiased, efficient statistical tree decision tree method.

Findings

The experimental results indicate that an improved classification performance was obtained in the decision level when merging the two data sources. In fact, unlike classification using only optical images, the proposed approach allowed to distinguish ecological land with similar spectrum but different scattering. Moreover, unlike classification using only polarimetric information, the integration of polarimetric and optical data allows to accurately distinguish reed from artemisia and sand from salt field and therefore achieve a detailed classification of the coastal area characteristics.

Originality/value

This research proposed an integrated classification method for coastal ecological land with polarimetric SAR and optical data. The object-based and decision-level fusion enables effective ecological land classification in coastal area was verified.

Abstract

Purpose

Experiments to investigate the characteristic distribution of nanoparticle-laden gas flow around a circular cylinder were performed with a fast mobility particle spectrometer. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Design/methodology/approach

The fast mobility particle sizer spectrometer is used to measure quasi-instantaneous particle number density. The acquired particle number density, total concentration, and geometric mean diameter at free stream and in the wake were used to discuss the particle characteristic distribution. The time-averaged velocity field detected by particle imaging velocimetry was used to investigate the effect of carried phase on nanoparticles distribution.

Findings

Results show that the total particle concentration in the free stream is larger than that in the wake. However, the geometric mean diameter of particle in the free stream is smaller than that in the wake for different Re. The total particle concentration and geometric mean diameter in the free stream and the wake both change in the same way, but with an obvious lag which increases with Re. Despite particle deposition, the number density of particles with electrical-mobility-equivalent diameters in the range from 220.7 to 523.3 nm in the wake is still higher than that in the free stream.

Originality/value

Though the particles-laden gas flow around a circular cylinder had been studied experimentally and numerically before, where particles are larger than one micrometer, investigators paid little attention on the nanoparticles-laden gas flow where particles are smaller than one micrometer, especially at high Reynolds number, because numerical methods so far cannot deal these problems completely and satisfactorily. However, this issue is widely existing in nature and engineering application, such as superfine dust or microorganism captured by a circular cylinder model.

Abstract

Organizational researchers studying well-being – as well as organizations themselves – often place much of the burden on employees to manage and preserve their own well-being. Missing from this discussion is how – from a human resources management (HRM) perspective – organizations and managers can directly and positively shape the well-being of their employees. The authors use this review to paint a picture of what organizations could be like if they valued people holistically and embraced the full experience of employees’ lives to promote well-being at work. In so doing, the authors tackle five challenges that managers may have to help their employees navigate, but to date have received more limited empirical and theoretical attention from an HRM perspective: (1) recovery at work; (2) women’s health; (3) concealable stigmas; (4) caregiving; and (5) coping with socio-environmental jolts. In each section, the authors highlight how past research has treated managerial or organizational support on these topics, and pave the way for where research needs to advance from an HRM perspective. The authors conclude with ideas for tackling these issues methodologically and analytically, highlighting ways to recruit and support more vulnerable samples that are encapsulated within these topics, as well as analytic approaches to study employee experiences more holistically. In sum, this review represents a call for organizations to now – more than ever – build thriving organizations.

Purpose

Traffic flow prediction has always been a top priority of intelligent transportation systems. There are many mature methods for short-term traffic flow prediction. However, the existing methods are often insufficient in capturing long-term spatial-temporal dependencies. To predict long-term dependencies more accurately, in this paper, a new and more effective traffic flow prediction model is proposed.

Design/methodology/approach

This paper proposes a new and more effective traffic flow prediction model, named channel attention-based spatial-temporal graph neural networks. A graph convolutional network is used to extract local spatial-temporal correlations, a channel attention mechanism is used to enhance the influence of nearby spatial-temporal dependencies on decision-making and a transformer mechanism is used to capture long-term dependencies.

Findings

The proposed model is applied to two common highway datasets: METR-LA collected in Los Angeles and PEMS-BAY collected in the California Bay Area. This model outperforms the other five in terms of performance on three performance metrics a popular model.

Originality/value

(1) Based on the spatial-temporal synchronization graph convolution module, a spatial-temporal channel attention module is designed to increase the influence of proximity dependence on decision-making by enhancing or suppressing different channels. (2) To better capture long-term dependencies, the transformer module is introduced.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to investigate the corrosion resistance of superalloys subjected to ultrasonic impact treatment (UIT). The passive film growth on the superalloys’ surface is analyzed to illustrate the corrosion mechanism.

Design/methodology/approach

Electrochemical tests were used to investigated the corrosion resistance of GH4738 superalloys with different UIT densities. The microstructure was compared before and after the corrosion tests. The passive film characterization was described by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) tests.

Findings

The compressive residual stress and corrosion resistance of the specimens significantly increased after UIT. The order of corrosion resistance is related to the UIT densities, i.e. 1.96 s/mm2 > 1.71 s/mm2 > 0.98 s/mm2 > as-cast. The predominant constituents of the passive films are TiO2, Cr2O3, MoO3 and NiO. The passive film on the specimen with 1.96 s/mm2 UIT density has the highest volume fraction of Cr2O3 and MoO3, which is the main reason for its superior corrosion resistance.

Originality/value

This study provides quantitative corrosion data for GH4738 superalloys treated by ultrasonic impact. The corrosion mechanism is explained by the passive film’s characterization.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the post-treatment processes on lattice structures of selective laser melting. Moreover, the effect of pressure during hot isostatic pressing (HIP) is determined.

Design/methodology/approach

Three post-treatment processes, annealing at 650°C, 920°C and HIP were adopted. The microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of selective lasering melted Ti6Al4V lattice structures after post-treatment were systematically investigated by optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, electron backscattered diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry and quasi-static mechanics tests.

Findings

The main findings in this paper are as below: first, the pores existing in the samples as-fabricated, annealed at 650°C and 920°C are disappeared after HIP. Second, the microstructure and compressive properties after HIP are similar to that after pure annealing at the same temperature. However, the HIPed sample had the highest number of cycles to failure. Third, the fracture mechanism of as-fabricated samples changes from mixed fracture to the micro-voids accumulation fracture after post-treatment processes.

Originality/value

HIP post-treatment can be replaced by annealing at the same temperature when the requirement for porosity and fatigue life is not very high.
