Abstract

Decentralized finance is a technological infrastructure built on a blockchain networking environment that supplies transparent, uncensorable, and decentralized financial services and products. This infrastructure offers the opportunity to replicate traditional financial instruments on a decentralized platform and incorporate added features provided by blockchain technology. It also allows the creation of new instruments native to blockchain technology unavailable through traditional financial institutions. This chapter presents an in-depth analysis of the inner workings of stablecoins, decentralized exchanges, automated market makers, liquidity pools, decentralized lending, synthetic instruments, and asset management. It also provides specific examples for each application and presents some current challenges the sector faces.

Abstract

Bitcoin’s introduction as the first cryptoasset in 2009 ushered in a new era, representing a seismic shift in the financial markets. Since then, this evolving asset class has generated much interest, excitement, and growth. This chapter begins by providing a brief background of cryptoassets. It then discusses their main types (cryptocurrencies, security tokens, and utility tokens), users (individual investors, major financial institutions, endowments, and hedge funds), and benefits and drawbacks. Next, it sets forth the book’s purpose, distinguishing features, intended audience, and structure. The chapter provides a synopsis of each of the remaining 21 chapters. Although no single book can encompass all changes and iterations of these technologies as they emerge in the marketplace, this book brings together a broad collection of industry expertise and academic analysis to create a book helpful to researchers, academics, and practitioners.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to determine local properties in a coarse grain zone of 10 mm thick butt welded joints made of structural S355 and high strength S960 steels. Metallographic analyses showed that the width of the investigated zone for both S355 and S960 weldments was too small for direct sampling. Therefore, samples with reproduced microstructure were manufactured by heat treatment taking into account chemical composition and cooling conditions of weldments.

Design/methodology/approach

The basis for the heat treatment was the time-temperature-transition (TTT) curve, whose shape is defined by welding and cooling parameters. In this study the TTT curve was determined experimentally during welding as well as numerically simulated using SYSWELD program. The work pieces were heat-treated according to the TTT curves using thermomechanical treatment simulator and evaluated in terms of microstructure and micro hardness distribution. Finally, the secondary specimens were manufactured and investigated in monotonic tensile tests.

Findings

The presented approach allows for the determination of the local properties of welded joints. In this study mechanical properties (stress-strain curves) of heat affected zone (HAZ) were successfully estimated using samples with reproduced microstructure. Furthermore, it was found out that the chemical composition in the HAZ was not influenced by the welding process. Thus, the HAZ microstructure can be successfully reproduced using base material. Additionally, the paper contains recommendations for simulation of the local microstructure and suggestions for the evaluation of the obtained results.

Originality/value

The advantage of the proposed approach is the enlargement of the material volume with homogeneous microstructure so that different local properties like toughness, fatigue behavior, crack propagation or crashworthiness can be analyzed, what is technically infeasible for the weldments with small HAZ.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate whether there is a relationship between asset-specific online search interest and movements in the US REIT market.

Design/methodology/approach

The authors collect search volume (SV) data from “Google Trends” for a set of keywords representing the information demand of real estate (equity) investors. On this basis, the authors test hypothetical investment strategies based on changes in internet SV, to anticipate REIT market movements.

Findings

The results reveal that people’s information demand can indeed serve as a successful predictor for the US REIT market. Among other findings, evidence is provided that there is a significant relationship between asset-specific keywords and the US REIT market. Specifically, investment strategies based on weekly changes in Google SV would have outperformed a buy-and-hold strategy (0.1 percent p.a.) for the Morgan Stanley Capital International US REIT Index by a remarkable 15.4 percent p.a. between 2006 and 2013. Furthermore, the authors find that real-estate-related terms are more suitable than rather general, finance-related terms for predicting REIT market movements.

Practical implications

The findings should be of particular interest for REIT market investors, as the established relationships can potentially be utilized to anticipate short-term REIT market movements.

Originality/value

This is the first paper which applies Google search query data to the REIT market.

Abstract

Purpose

This paper aims to determine the influence of geometrical features of the channel on the acoustic wave generation in a ducted cavity. The analysis is focussed on the effects of the change in the entrance length upstream the cavity and the height. The study is supposed to investigate boundary layer and acoustic wave parameters, and an attempt will be made to determine the correlation between the geometrical dimension and those parameters.

Design/methodology/approach

Analysis is conducted with the aim of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tool and selected results are validated with experimental investigations. The influence of grid resolution and time discretization is analysed. Four different entrance lengths and height are investigated. Qualitative and quantitative comparison between cases is presented.

Findings

The investigations prove the small influence of the entrance length on acoustic wave generation, but channel height due to wave reflection and interference inside of the cavity has a significant impact on wave frequency and sound pressure level. Channel height has also impact on generation and shape of the vortex created in the cavity inlet.

Originality/value

The paper extends the knowledge of phenomena taking place in the ducted cavities. Results obtained from these investigations will be useful in designing new cooling techniques and in noise reduction. The CFD analysis makes it possible to determine the correlations between channel dimensions and SPL function and frequency of sound waves.

Abstract

Purpose

Material extrusion technology is considered to be an effective way to realize the accurate and integrated manufacturing of high-performance metal diamond tools with complex structures. The present work aims to report the G4 binder that can be used to create metal composite filament loading high concentrations of large diamond particles through comparative experiments.

Design/methodology/approach

The quality of filaments was evaluated by surface topography observation and porosity measurement. And the printability of filaments was further studied by the tensile test, rheological test, shear analysis and printing test.

Findings

The results show that the G4 binder exhibits the best capacity for loading diamonds among G1–G4. The L4 filament created with G4 has no defects such as pores, cracks and patterns on the surface and section, and has the lowest porosity, which is about 1/3 of the L1. Therefore, the diamond-containing composite filament based on G4 binder exhibits the best quality. On the other hand, the results of the tensile test of L5–L8 filaments reveal that as the diamond content increases from 10% to 30%, the tensile strength of the filament decreases by 29.52%, and the retention force coefficient decreases by 15.74%. This can be attributed to the formation of inefficient bonding areas of the clustered diamond particles inside the composite filament, which also leads to a weakening of the shear strength. Despite this, the results of the printing test show that the diamond-containing composite filament based on the G4 binder has reliable printability.

Originality/value

Therefore, the G4 binder is considered to solve the most critical first challenge in the development of diamond-containing filament.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to test the impact of digital skills on the entrepreneurial intentions of last-year undergraduate students in Jordanian universities, especially after the Coronavirus disease pandemic and the digital transformation in education and business patterns. In addition, it aims to assess the role of entrepreneurial alertness as a mediator and entrepreneurship education as a moderator in the relationship between the independent and dependent variables.

Design/methodology/approach

The quantitative study used a questionnaire distributed to 401 students from different Jordanian universities. The data was collected over 2 months and two structural equation models were developed using AMOS 25 to examine the relationship.

Findings

A significant negative relationship was found between digital skills and entrepreneurial intentions of last-year undergraduate students in Jordanian universities post-coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. A fully mediating role of the alertness variable has appeared in addition to a significant moderating role of entrepreneurship education.

Originality/value

This is the first study that attempts to investigate the impact of digital skills on students' entrepreneurial intentions in Jordan after the COVID-19 pandemic, In addition, it is one of the few studies that assess the mediator's and moderator's effects on the same conditions. Finally, the study provided a review of the definitions and models used as part of the contribution to upcoming reviews.
